I’ve often wondered about Hitler but never out loud.
When you give a dog a bad name and hang him, no snowball in hell can refreeze the Jewish spiel.
If history is true—not to suit the Jews—then surely Hitler ordered on November 30, 1941, there was to be “no liquidation of the Jews.”
In other words, no Holocaust.
I grew up as a Jew in the 50’s and no mention of gas chambers, 6 million, or holocaust, was ever heard.
All we heard was “work camps.”
These for political prisoners, understandably, mostly communist Jews.
Ask anyone who works for Germans.
They put people to work, not to death. They’re too efficient for that.
And you work overtime with no extra pay.
It wasn’t until the mid-60’s when the secular state of Isra-hell got American Jews to churn out the ‘victimization card.’

It’s a tiny outpost of freedom and democracy and virtue in a region filled with tyranny and horror,” by simply bringing up the rather profound fact that Israel has no Written Constitution defining it as a “democracy,” which is the political gold standard of any sovereign nation ever since the first constitution of its kind was adopted in 1788 by the United States of America.
Israel has no written constitution that was ever ratified by the people. Even Jewpedia has to admit that “‘The Basic Laws of Israel’ (Ḥukey HaYesod) are thirteen quasi-constitutional laws of the State of Israel.” It’s basically a mashup of common law and case law at this point after 70 years, and sort of justified as an “unwritten constitution” law theory maintained by several countries.
Jewpedia goes on to state: The Basic Laws were intended to be draft chapters of a future Israeli constitution, which has been postponed since 1950; they act as a de facto constitution until their future incorporation into a formal, unitary, written constitution.

The reason that the formalization of a written constitution has been delayed for over 70 years is that the Jews would be forced to give formal equal constitutional rights to the hated Palestinians.
A properly written and ratified constitution would erase the absolute right of Jews and their national/racist Jewish supremacist self-sovereignty and self-determination on the land as solely a “Jewish state” and their military occupation and thieving annexation of the State of Palestine lands.
It would abolish the second-class citizenship of Palestinian Israelis living on Israeli territory as “Arab Israelis” (to attempt to cancel these Arabs’ Palestinian roots) and make them full citizens.
A written constitution would legally open the door wide open to abandoning the rotting corpse of the Two-State Solution and open up a referendum calling for a constitutional unitary bi-national state of Jewish and Arab co-equality and full citizenship.

The three that you mentioned, Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon are constitutional democratic republics, while the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a constitutional monarchy. Jordan adopted its constitution in 1952.
Egypt’s Constitution has been amended many times, but it’s first written constitution in the 20th century was adopted in 1923.
The Syrian Constitution of 1930, drafted by a committee under Ibrahim Hananu, was the founding constitution of the First Syrian Republic.
The Constitution of Lebanon was adopted on 23 May 1926.

Well, Dr. Kennedy provided a link to a clip about a Hitler impersonator moving about in Germany and the the usually friendly reactions of the crowds of people who encounter him.
The clip is from the German movie, Look Who’s Back | Er ist Weider Da. I managed to find the full movie with English subtitles, and I watched it, captivated in the first few minutes. It was surprisingly good, especially the unscripted parts of interactions with the public, and even the dry cleaner.
Look Who’s Back is a 2015 German satirical black comedy film based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Timur Vermes.
The film features unscripted vignettes of Oliver Masucci as Adolf Hitler interacting with ordinary Germans, interspersed with scripted storyline sequences.
My favorite YT comments are:

GHISLAINE Maxwell has adopted her late father’s Jewish faith behind bars — and has been rewarded with better food and more time off work.
Maxwell — who helped financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse teen girls — registered her religion on arrival at jail.
She gets kosher food, which is costlier, access to a Rabbi and is excused work for 25 hours from sundown on Fridays to observe the Sabbath.
She can also take a break from prison chores on Jewish holidays.
Maxwell, 61, is also eligible for the associated wine or grape juice and breaking of bread.
The details were revealed by journalist Silja J.A. Talvi, who looks into conditions at jails.
Talvi told The Sun on Sunday Maxwell was contacted in jail by a civil rights prisoner organisation called Reaching Out, based in New York.
It specifically helps Jewish prisoners and informed Ghislaine through another inmate they would be there for her.

“We have and will continue to address her needs.”

(JTA) — The Anti-Defamation League expressed concern about a South African song calling to “Kill the Boer” after Elon Musk repeatedly prodded the group to speak out — the latest in an ongoing tiff between the Jewish civil rights group and the billionaire.
Late last month, a video of a left-wing South African politician leading a rendition of the song spread across Musk’s social network, which is popularly known as Twitter.
The lyrics to the song, which originated as an anti-apartheid chant, include the words “Kill the Boer, the farmer,” a reference to white South Africans. The politician, Julius Malema, chanted those lyrics into a microphone along with the crowd at a large rally, pointing his finger like a gun.
Malema has since shared posts on the network, now known as X, saying that the chant is meant as a “struggle song” and is not meant to be taken literally, a position echoed by historians of apartheid.
But voices on the right in South Africa and elsewhere — including Musk, who was born there and lived there until age 17, shortly after apartheid’s end — have called for the song to be condemned.
“They are openly pushing for genocide of white people in South Africa,” Musk posted on July 31. Addressing the president of South Africa, he wrote, “@CyrilRamaphosa, why do you say nothing?”
Far-right activists have alleged for years that white South African farmers are being killed in large numbers. Scholars say that claim is false, but in 2018 it was endorsed by then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson and, subsequently, by then-President Donald Trump.
Those claims have resurfaced in the days since the video of Malema was posted, and Musk has turned his attention to the ADL, repeatedly asking the group publicly to condemn Malema.
On Aug. 4, he posted, “Why do you say nothing, @ADL?” Four days later, he wrote, “They absolutely mean literal genocide. Why are organizations like @ADL silent?”
On Wednesday, he wrote that he was “calling out NY Times & ADL in particular” for alleged racism in U.S. media against white people and Asians.

The statement went on to say that “words matter, and people, especially those in public life, should refrain from expressions that invoke the threat of violence.” But it added that the discussion surrounding the song has prompted claims of “white genocide,” a term favored by white supremacists who falsely allege that there is a plot by non-white people to kill whites.
Claims that Jews are out to destroy white people have fueled antisemitic attacks, including the synagogue shootings in Pittsburgh and Poway, California.
“Such wild charges have been used to excuse hate, to justify harassment and to rationalize violence,” Greenblatt’s statement said.

Russia is Setting Up An “AfroVillage”
COVERT GEOPOLITICS
The Moscow and Tver Regions are preparing to welcome 3,000 families from South Africa.
In a rural area situated roughly halfway between Moscow and St. Petersburg, an “African village” is in the works as part of a five-year pilot program initiated by the African International Congress (AIC) in Russia. This project aims to settle a significant number of migrants from South Africa.
Representatives from the AIC, along with African diplomats and local officials from the Tver Region, recently held a ceremony where they unveiled the symbolic cornerstone of the village. The chosen location is near the hamlet of Porechye.
Konstantin Klimenko, who is the head of the Eurasian International University (EIU) and the general representative of the AIC in Russia, stated that the plan is to establish 30 settlements across Russia for Afrikaners who wish to immigrate.
These Afrikaners, who are of European descent and have ancestral ties to Africa, are primarily Boers or farmers. Many are converting to Orthodoxy and moving to Russia due to the appeal of its moral, spiritual way of life, and traditional family values.
The Afrovillage is a component of the ongoing pilot project in the Moscow and Tver regions, aiming to settle approximately 3,000 Boer families. Should the project prove successful, the AIC and its partners have intentions to extend it to other regions within Russia.
Although construction of the Afrovillage has not yet commenced, the organizers of the project are actively working to establish a support network for the incoming settlers. Starting from September 1, the EIU will launch an online Russian language learning program for around 200 settlers.
Furthermore, project organizers have collaborated with a local farmer named Alexei Trofimov to establish the ‘Milkburg’ cheesery near the future village. The initial settlers, who intend to be dairy farmers, will be able to procure their supplies from Trofimov and sell their products through Milkburg.
It is worth noting that this settlement initiative appears to be distinct from the expansion of economic and educational opportunities in Africa, which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced during the Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg.
In May, a separate plan came to light for an “American village” in the southern Moscow Region, intended for 200 families of conservatives seeking refuge from political and religious persecution in the United States.
On the other hand, Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, strongly criticized the New York Times on Friday, accusing them of endorsing white genocide in South Africa. This came after the newspaper published an article that downplayed the significance of South African MP Julius Malema singing a song called ‘Kill the Boer’ to a large rally audience, suggesting it was merely a metaphor.
Musk, a billionaire who grew up in South Africa, tweeted, “The audacity of the New York Times to support calls for genocide is unbelievable! If there was ever a moment to boycott that publication, it’s now.” He also shared a link where readers could access Times articles for free.
The media outlet had argued that only “certain far-right Americans” interpreted the song, which Malema sang with the crowd participating in a call-and-response manner, as an incitement to violence. The song’s chorus alternated between shouts of ‘Kill the Boer’ and ‘Kill the farmer.’
The Times cited Malema’s court testimony from the previous year and the perspective of some “historians,” maintaining that the song should not be taken literally. They suggested that it was aimed at highlighting the government’s failure to address land ownership disparities between Black and white South Africans.
In an attempt to deflect from Malema’s calls to “shoot to kill” white farmers, the Times shifted attention to Musk’s retweeting of a video. This move, they contended, convinced certain right-wing Americans that white South Africans might be facing danger.
Musk responded to the video of Malema singing by tweeting, “They are openly advocating for the genocide of white people in [South Africa].” He also directed a question to President Cyril Ramaphosa, asking why he remained silent on the matter.
The New York Times was not the only one emphasizing Musk’s remarks while overlooking Malema’s stance. Mother Jones published an entire article discussing how white nationalists supposedly celebrated Musk’s involvement, dismissing the concept of “white genocide” as a mere conspiracy theory.
Malema performed the song ‘Kill the Boer’ at the 10th anniversary celebration of his left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters party. This party was founded in part due to Malema being expelled from the African National Congress, the party associated with Nelson Mandela, for singing the same song in 2012.
The decision to take in farmers from Africa is a wise move for Putin considering that agriculture is an expanding industry in Russia. It’s also good for geopolitics where everybody is happy, except the warmongers.

Let us just get the terminology understandable for those who don’t know: The terms “Boer” and “Afrikaners” used in this article refer to white people of European origin. Since black rule in 1994, around 80000 of this people have been murdered.
The first attempt by President Putin to help this people (which I am part of) actually started in 2017 when visa requirements for South African passport holders were waived for visits up to 90 days.
Since then, there were several “fact finding missions” from here to different places in Russia. I am not aware of anything significantly negative found there during this missions.

This very same controllers of communism “trained” hundreds or thousands of “freedom fighters” from Africa, to fight “white colonial rule” for their “independence”, which resulted in complete dependence within 3 years or less.

It was all in vain as the then minister of foreign affairs, RF Botha (Rothchild puppet) signed South West Africa “away” in favour of SWAPO, the terrorist group, who consequently took over the rulership and changed the name to Namibia.
Everything in Russia changed when the last Rothchild puppet, Boris Yeltsin, was replaced by the first real elected president Putin, since the communist revolution. The satellite TV broadcaster, Multichoice, used to broadcast RT, but I was told by them that it was not their decision. Their link from Europe was cut off – I was told. So, the only “other side of the story” is not available on South African TV anymore.
On the other hand, the ruling ANC, which came to power with Soviet help, also believe that Russia is still the Soviet Union. As this ruling ANC is a total failure, most of the opposition parties use this as reason to be against Putin and Russia, only because the ruling ANC support Putin and Russia.
As the truth can only be suppressed for a certain time, I believe that more people will finally “see” instead of “look and look but see nothing”.
The initiative from Russia as outlined in this article, will likely be a success. Very important is that it should not be referred to as “African Village”. “Afrikaner Village” would be the correct name.
All my experience with Russian and Belorussian people are good and so I don’t think that there will be an integration problem.
Those who choose to go there must realize that it is totally different from here and that they will have to learn to read and speak Russian – which is possible. I would say that those under 50 have a good chance to get settled.

There are a lot of people out there whom I have little faith in. For example how does Alex Jones stay in business after his huge financial loss? After the death sentence was handed down, Demjanjuk’s family was able to discover previously suppressed evidence – much of it from Soviet Russian archives – indicating that the real “Ivan the Terrible” was another Ukrainian named Ivan Marchenko (or Marczenko).
This new evidence discredited the courtroom testimony of five Jewish camp survivors, each of whom had “positively” identified Demjanjuk as the sadistic mass murderer of Treblinka.[1]
As historians know, and as common sense would suggest, such decades-old testimony is far less trustworthy than contemporary records or forensic evidence.[2]
And yet, Treblinka’s reputation as a mass extermination center is based almost entirely on precisely such subjective and unprovable testimony by former prisoners – evidence that has proven to be notoriously unreliable in several major trials of alleged “Nazi war criminals.”[3]
There is no documentary evidence that Treblinka was an extermination center. In fact, contemporary records suggest that the camp had a very different function.
Aerial reconnaissance photographs taken in 1944 of the Treblinka “death camp” site – and forgotten for almost 45 years in the National Archives in Washington, DC – cast serious doubts on the widely accepted story that it was a mass extermination center.
Discovered in 1989, and published here for the first time in the United States, these German reconnaissance photos corroborate other evidence indicating that Treblinka was actually a transit camp.[4]
These photographs indicate that the remarkably small camp was not isolated, or even particularly well guarded. (They clearly show that fields where Polish farmers planted and cultivated crops were directly adjacent to the camp perimeter.)
Moreover, the camp’s burial area quite obviously appears too small to contain the hundreds of thousands of bodies supposedly buried there. (Casting doubt on the widely accepted story of hundreds of thousands of Treblinka victims, these photos suggest instead that only those deportees who died during the sometimes protracted rail journey to the camp were buried there.)

Letters and postcards that arrived in the Warsaw ghetto from Jews who, by all accounts, had been deported to Treblinka, indicate that the camp was a transit center from where Jews were resettled in the occupied Soviet territories.
These messages, which arrived from settlements and camps in Belarus (Byelorussia), Ukraine, and even Russia proper (near Smolensk), were written by Jews who had been deported in 1942.
Some letters and cards had been sent by mail and some had arrived through the underground. Many mentioned that the senders were working hard, but confirmed that they (and often their children) were being fed.[47]
Completely contrary to its supposed character as a top secret extermination center, Treblinka was neither secret nor even closely guarded, as both former inmates and officials have confirmed.
“Secrecy? Good heavens, there was no secrecy about Treblinka,” Jewish prisoner Richard Glazer later testified. “All the Poles between there and Warsaw must have known about it, and lived off the proceeds. All the peasants came to barter, the Warsaw whores did business with the Ukrainians – it was a circus for all of them.”
Polish farmers worked the fields that directly adjoined the camp. “And many others,” said Jewish survivor Berek Rojzman, “came to the fence to barter, mostly with the Ukrainians, but with us too.”[48]
Even regular German concentration camps such as Dachau and Buchenwald were much more closely guarded than Treblinka. As already mentioned, aerial reconnaissance photographs taken in 1944 confirm that the area around Treblinka was not cleared.
The photos show that one perimeter of the camp passed through a wooded area, and that cultivated fields where Polish farmers worked were directly adjacent to the camp perimeter.[49]

Raskin said he was in remission since the end of April after being under chemotherapy for a form of B-cell Lymphoma.
In June, NPR reported he was free of cancer.
He started wearing the signature chemo scarf that women usually wear during chemo or radiation because of therapy-induced baldness back in January because some edgy entertainer who wears a scarf to look like a tough guy gave it to him, so now I guess it’s just Raskin’s image of his radical himself.
I can’t find anything that he’s gone back into treatment again. I didn’t search that hard for it, but being Raskin, if it was back, we’d all know about it, because he wouldn’t shut up about it.
I think the headscarf now is Raskin just showing that he’s special. I wouldn’t wish a 3rd go-round with cancer on anyone.

The Catholic Church did not take nearly as big a hit in Russia as the Orthodox Church did during the Bolshevik Revolution and the Red Terror. Catholicism was a minority religion ranking behind Islam in Imperial Russia.
Latin Rite and Eastern Rite Catholics in the first general 1897 of Imperial Russia counted for less than 9.5% of the total population, and these were largely located in Western Russia in the historical Catholic territories of Poland, Lithuania, and parts of West Ukraina — after the 3rd Partition of Poland and the Pale of the Settlement in 1795. It included populations of Catholic Poles, Germans, Lithuanians, Ruthenians (“Greek Catholics”) and Balts.
In the first general 1897 Imperial Russian Census, there were counted 125.6 million people excluding Finland.
Rounded, 87 million (70%) were Eastern Orthodox, 14 million (11%) were Muslim, 11 million were Roman or Ruthenian Uniate Catholics of the Greek Rite (9.5%)
In 1914, there were 160 million people in the Russian Empire inclusive of newly acquired Asian territories.
At the first partition of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania between Russia, Austria, and Prussia in the mid-18th century, according to the partition treaty, of the 1,300,000 inhabitants acquired by Russia, 900,000 were Catholics, of whom 100,000 followed the Latin rite, and 800,000 of the Ruthenian Uniate Catholic Church (later, “Ukrainian” Greek Catholic among the budding Ukrainian Nationalists in the Austrian Empire disavowing their Rus’ ancestry).
“Ruthenian” is the Latinized form of Rus’yn, the historical people of Kievan Rus heritage and ancestry, which Constantinople named as the Rhos back as early as AD 870, inclusive of the later Orthodox Cossacks, used in Catholic writings to distinguish the Ruthenian Uniate Church as it was early known from the ‘Disunited’ Rus’ Orthodox living under the yoke of the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
The rest of the population were Rus’ Orthodox on their ancestral national territory, mostly peasant serfs, who became Lithuanian subjects. The Rus’ Orthodox composed about 60% of the Duchy’s population and their national homeland was about 70% of the ducal territory.
A condition of Lithuania’s political union with Poland under one crown as the Kingdom of Poland and the Duchy of Lithuania (the Polish king styled both titles) was handing over its rich, agricultural Rus’ Land territorial possessions over to Poland and the Szlachta (Magnates & Nobility), and so the Orthodox Rus’yn wound up becoming Catholic Polish subjects.
You will get the idea of distribution of Orthodoxy in the Russian Empire from this map based on the 1897 Census, even though it’s labeled in Russian. Catholic and Protestants populated most of the western borderlands of the empire (West Russia), where the white and very pale orange regions of the map chart 0.5- 10% Orthodox Christian in Russian Poland and Baltics.
Then there is, at the Dniepr River, a section of Right Bank Russian Ukraine (roughly Central Ukraine including Kiev, as West Ukraine was in Austria & Poland) where Orthodox population is up to 50-70%, and then from the Left Bank Russian Ukraine into Russia proper, the Orthodox population approaches 99% in many regions, and is characterized by the darker orange and reddish colors.

There were 1.6 million Roman Catholics on the territory of the new Soviet state in 1917, but many of them were able to escape to Poland, Germany, or France.
There had been over 15 million prior to the war, but after Poland, with the greatest number of Catholics, the Baltics, and the western territories were lost, this number shrunk greatly.

On the same hand, there were a miniscule number of Western Russian, Baltic and Polish Orthodox living in those same breakaway territories who escaped the Red Terror.
Catholic Poland re-emerged 1917-1918 as an independent state after WWI and the Bolshevik-Russian Civil War, and so the bulk of the Polish Catholic Church remained relatively unscathed from the Bolshevik Militant Atheist repressions before WWII. After, with the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe, is a different story for the Catholic Church.
The crumbling of the empires had a great effect on the Ukrainian nationalist movement, and in a short period of four years a number of competing Ukrainian nationalist and Soviet governments sprang up, largely characterized by idealisms and nation-building, as by chaos and civil war that were outside the Soviet reach for a time.
Matters stabilized somewhat in 1921 with the territory of modern-day Ukraine divided between Soviet Ukraine (which would become a constituent republic of the Soviet Union in 1922) and the 2nd Republic of Poland which absorbed the Galician or Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and also the small ethnic-Ukrainian regions (a remnant of Orthodox Rus’yn who refused Ukrainian Nationalism and Uniatism) belonging to Czechoslovakia and to Romania.
After the Polish-Soviet Peace of Riga, Ukrainian territory found itself split among the Ukrainian SSR in the center, Poland in the west, and Crimea, Kuban, and the former Cossacks lands became southern Russia in the east. Carpathian Rus’ (“Ruthenia”) found itself in Czechoslovakia, and Bukovina in Romania.
The Ukraine was a rump state of its former self. The 1919 Treaty of Versailles secured the borders of Ukrainian land after those of other European countries.
In the Ukraine west of the Dneiper, the provinces of Galicia and western Volhynia, heartland of modern Ukrainian Nationalism with its population of Ukrainian Latin Catholics and nationalist Ukrainian Greek Catholics, were annexed to Poland.
As such, these Latin & Greek Catholic populations also were spared the Militant Atheist repressions aimed at the Russian Orthodox Church, as being politically outside of the Soviet Union, at least until WWII.
Deplorable as it was after these geopolitical changes which took the bulk of the Catholic Church in the former Russian Empire, there were only 1.5 Catholics of any sort left inside the Soviet Union who had to face the religious repressions of Bolshevik Militant Atheism and the Red Terror alongside the population of 110 million Russian Orthodox Christians, Muslims, and Buddhists. Finland, and its Orthodox population, had declared independence in December, 1917.
Clearly, you can see that, while East European Catholics later suffered in other ways due to WWII, that clearly, the Catholic Church in Russia DID NOT take nearly big a hit as the Orthodox did for decades under the repressions of Miltant Atheism, by a factor of roughly 70 Orthodox to 1 Catholic.
And besides, as imperfect a protection as it was, in the first decade of Communist rule, the Vatican and the Bolsheviks early came to an understanding which temporarily shielded Catholics in Soviet Russia because the Bolsheviks were desperate for Protestant & Catholic food and humanitarian aide, arranged through American Catholic, Protestant, and government agencies, for relief of the Russian-Volga famine of 1921-1923, which struck some 16 million Russians & Volga Germans, at least 5 million of which died of starvation (Orthodox & mostly Protestants).
No, this was not the Famine of 1930-1933. At the behest of the US Government, eading the Papal Relief Mission to Russia in 1922-23 as director general and overall organizer and coordinator for the world famine relief effort largely routed through America, was American Jesuit Fr. Edmund Welsh, who was also the Pope’s special emissary to the Soviet Government.
The Russian mission would become a watershed event in Welsh’s life. And it would use his organizational and diplomatic capacities to the fullest both as Director General for the Papal Relief Mission to Russia – charged with organizing the distribution of the food and medical supplies contributed by Catholic charities to the Russian population – and as acting Representative of the Holy See in Russia – designated to deal diplomatically with the Soviet Government regarding Roman Catholic interests in Russia. It was, essentially, two missions in one.
Lenin was looking for diplomatic recognition from the Pope Pius XI. For a time, the grand manipulator held out the tantalizing bait of offering that the Catholic Church might be allowed to commence its missionary work among the Orthodox Christians crushed by the Bolshevik regime should a more solid diplomatic relationship develop.
Alas, that didn’t quite pan out, as Lenin had died in 1924, and with Stalin at the helm, relations between the Holy See and Moscow dried up and shriveled away.
In Poland, Marshal Józef Pilsudski and his political allies wanted to gain Ukrainian support by offering limited local autonomy as way to minimize Soviet influences in the borderlands.
However, this approach was abandoned after Pilsudski’s death in 1935, due to continued nationalistic unrest and violence among the Ukrainian population, with the Polish government responding by restricting rights of people among the Galician Greek Catholics who declared Ukrainian nationality instead of Polish, but they were still protected from the Bolshevik Red Terror.
The Kingdom of Romania gained the province of Bukovina. Czechoslovakia secured the former lands of Austria-Hungary, Uzhhorod and Mukachevo.
The remaining central and eastern Ukrainian provinces were left to the Soviet Union, which, very similar to the ethno-religious distribution today, were about 95% Russian Orthodox and a minority of Crimean Greek Orthodox in cities along the Azov Sea, and Crimean Tatars.These central and east Ukrainian Russian Orthodox and the minority faiths did suffer early from the Militant Atheist repressions by the Soviet Ukraine regime.
Then, in December 1922, with Bolsheviks secure in their power over its territory, Soviet Ukraine joined the Russian, Byelorussian, and Transcaucasian Soviet Republics to form the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
In 1914 in Russia, there were 55,173 Russian Orthodox churches and 29,593 chapels, 112,629 priests and deacons, 550 monasteries and 475 convents with a total of 95,259 monks and nuns.
The 1921-23 famine came at the end of six-and-a-half years of unrest and violence (World War I, the two Russian Revolutions of 1917, and the Russian Civil War). Many different political and military factions were involved in those events, and most of them have been accused by their enemies of having contributed to or even bearing sole responsibility for the famine.
Be that as it may, the Bolsheviks started a campaign of seizing church property in 1922. That year, over 4.5 million golden roubles of property were seized. Of those, one million gold roubles were spent for famine relief.
In a secret March 19, 1922 letter to the Politburo, Lenin expressed an intention to seize several hundred million golden roubles for famine relief.
In the same letter, Lenin explains that the famine provides an opportunity against the Orthodox Church. The famine was used politically as an excuse for the Bolshevik leadership to persecute the Orthodox Church, which held significant sway over much of the peasantry.
Russian anti-Bolshevik white émigrés in London, Paris, and elsewhere also used the famine as a media opportunity to highlight the iniquities of the Soviet regime in an effort to prevent trade with and official recognition of the Bolshevik government.
The year 1917 was a major turning point for the history of Russia, and also the Russian Orthodox Church. The Russian Empire was dissolved and the imperial government – which had granted the Church numerous privileges – was overthrown. After a few months of political turmoil, the Bolsheviks took power in October 1917 and declared a separation of church and state. The government seized all church lands.
In the first five years after the Bolshevik revolution, 28 Orthodox bishops and 1,200 priests, and unknown numbers of monastics were executed.
This included people, other members of the Romanov Royal Family, like the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Fyodorovna who was at this point a monastic. Along with her murder was Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich Romanov; the Princes Ioann Konstantinovich, Konstantin Konstantinovich, Igor Konstantinovich and Vladimir Pavlovich Paley; Grand Duke Sergei’s secretary, Fyodor Remez; and Varvara Yakovleva, a sister from the Grand Duchess Elizabeth’s convent and her companion.
They were herded into the forest, pushed into an abandoned mineshaft and grenades were then hurled into the mineshaft to kill them. They weren’t all killed instantly, it took several days for the seriously wounded, still living, to die. St. Elizabeth’s remains were buried in Jerusalem, in the Church of Maria Magdalene.
I only know, off-hand, of two Catholic bishops and perhaps a dozen Catholic priests who were put on trial then executed for refusing to turn over church valuables to the Soviet government. There were Catholic churches in every major Russian city in European Russia, and something like 300 Catholic parishes in the former Russian Empire, but I’m still trying to find just how many Catholic churches there were left in the early Soviet Union that were repressed.
The Militant Atheist anti-religious campaign and persecution revved at full power in the 1920s and 1930s. The sixth sector of the OGPU, led by Yevgeny Tuchkov, aggressively arrested and executed bishops, priests, and devout worshipers for refusing to hand in church valuables. Some 20,000 people were executed just outside Butovo, including many clergy, ascetics and laymen.
The Butovo Firing Range or Butovo Shooting Range was an execution site of the Soviet secret police located near Drozhzhino in Leninsky District, Moscow Oblast from 1938 to 1953. Its use for mass execution has been documented; it was prepared as a site for mass burial.
The Church survived underground, and the argument can be made that the persecution in some ways made it stronger.
The Party’s anti-religious policy arguably had a certain salutary effect: if nothing else, it helped to expunge the clerical dead wood, those who served from convenience rather than conviction. More important, the Bolsheviks unwittingly helped to foster grassroots religious revival in the 1920s: by demolishing the institutional church and shifting the authority to the parish, they helped to empower parishioners, above all, religious activists.
It was precisely because these non-clerical ‘tserkovniki’ so aggressively propagated the faith and defended their Church that they would become a prime target of repression in the 1930s instead of the clergy.
The mass closure of churches continued until 1939, by which time there was only a few hundred left. According to the official data of the government Commission on Rehabilitation:
in 1937 136,900 Orthodox clerics were arrested, 85,300 of them were shot dead;
in 1938 28,300 arrested, 21,500 of them shot dead;
in 1939 1,500 arrested, 900 of them shot dead;
in 1940 5,100 arrested, 1,100 of them shot dead.
The Solovki Special Purpose Camp was cruelly established in the repurposed monastery on the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea, one of the holiest sites of Russian spirituality in all of Russian Orthodox history which the Bolsheviks chose especially to make mockery of and gloat over Militant Atheism’s triumph over Christianity.
Eight metropolitans, twenty archbishops, and forty-seven bishops of the Orthodox Church were tortured, beaten and died there, along with tens of thousands of the laity.
Of these, 95,000 were put to death, executed by firing squad. Father Pavel Florensky was one of the New-martyrs of this particular period as well as Metropolitan Joseph (Ivan Petrovykh).
Many thousands of victims of persecution, “the martyrs known only to God,” murdered and dumped into anonymous mass graves, were subsequently recognized in a special canon of saints known as the “New-Martyrs and Confessors of Russia”.
The hundreds of thousands of the hierarchy, monastics, and lay members of the Russian Orthodox Church bore the brunt for two full decades of the Communist Party’s furious Bolshevik Revolution and Militant Atheism that intended to unleash hell and burn the world to the ground.
The regime applied a different policy toward the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church and the Belorussian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
Viewed by the government as very nationalistic, both churches were suppressed, first at the end of the 1920s and again in 1944 after they had renewed themselves under German occupation. The leadership of both churches was decimated; large numbers of priests–2,000 Belorussian priests alone–were shot or sent to labor camps, and the believers of these two churches were harassed and persecuted.
The policy toward the Georgian Orthodox Church has been somewhat different. That church has fared far worse than the Russian Orthodox Church under the Soviet regime. During World War II, however, the Georgian Orthodox Church was allowed greater autonomy in running its affairs in return for the church’s call to its members to support the war effort.
The The Georgian Orthodox Church did not, however, achieve the kind of accommodation with the authorities that the Russian Orthodox Church had. The government reimposed tight control over it after the war. Out of some 2,100 churches in 1917, only 200 were still open in the 1980s, and the church was forbidden to serve its faithful outside the Georgian Republic. In many cases, the regime forced the church to conduct services in Old Church Slavonic instead of in the Georgian language.
Then came WWII. Stalin called a truce on the war against the Orthodox Church, suddenly needing its assistance to mobilize patriotic Orthodox Christians for the war. The incessant repression going on everywhere stopped. The German attack on the Soviet Union in 1941 forced Stalin to enlist the Russian Orthodox Church as an ally to arouse Russian patriotism against the foreign aggression.
By 1941 only 500 churches remained open out of about 55,000 in existence prior to World War I. As for the Russian Orthodox Church, Soviet authorities have sought to control it and, in times of national crisis, to exploit it for the regime’s own purposes; but their ultimate goal has been to eliminate it.
At the start of the war, fully 65% of Russians were still Orthodox believers, despite the decades of repressions. The 1937 census demonstrated that in this huge country an enormous percentage of the population were believers: two-thirds of the rural population and one third of the municipal…totaling 100 million people.
It was the laity who withstood state attempts to destroy their Church once and for all.
From the first days of WWII the Orthodox Church dedicated itself to the defense of the motherland; this resulted in a significant change in the state policy towards religion. Stalin and the leadership of the All-Russian Communist Party sought to unite the faithful and atheists against Russia’s enemy.
The state’s attempt to neutralize fascist propaganda, which had represented Germany as the protector of Christianity on the territory of the USSR, also played a role in the policy change, as did the Soviet Union’s relationship with its allies, the US and Great Britain.
In September 1943 Stalin permitted the election of a Patriarch, whereupon churches opened and religious literature began to be disseminated to boost patriotism for the war effort regardless of faith (in defense of the Church) or atheist ideology (in defense of the Party).
Religious life revived somewhat within the Russian Orthodox Church during and after the war. Thousands of churches were reopened and multiplied to 22,000 before Khrushchev came to power. The regime permitted religious publications, and church membership grew, subject to state restraints and supervision of political commissars, who sometimes wore cassocks.
The Soviet regime’s policy of cooperation with the Russian Orthodox Church was reversed by Khrushchev. Although the church remained officially sanctioned, in 1959 Khrushchev launched a very severe anti-religions campaign that was continued in a less stringent manner by his successor. By 1975 the number of operating Russian Orthodox churches was reduced to 7,000.
Some of the most prominent members of the Russian Orthodox hierarchy and activists were jailed or forced to leave the church. Their place was taken by a docile clergy who were obedient to the state and who were sometimes infiltrated by KGB agents, making the Russian Orthodox Church useful to the regime.
The actual Catholic tragedy closer to par with what the Orthodox suffered for two decades at the hands of the godless Bolsheviks was still to come, during and after WWII.
The Soviet government’s policies toward the Catholic Church were strongly influenced by Soviet Catholics’ recognition of an outside authority as head of their church. Also, in the two republics where most of the Catholics lived, the Lithuanian Republic and the Ukrainian Republic, Catholicism and nationalism were closely linked.
Although the Roman Catholic Church in the Lithuanian Republic was tolerated, large numbers of the clergy were imprisoned, many seminaries were closed, and police agents infiltrated the remainder. The anti-Catholic campaign in the Lithuanian Republic abated after Stalin’s death, but harsh measures against the church were resumed in 1957 and continued through the Brezhnev era.
Soviet religious policy was particularly harsh toward the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Ukrainian Catholics fell under Soviet rule in 1939 when western Ukraine was incorporated into the Soviet Union as part of the Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact. Although the Ukrainian Catholic Church was permitted to function, it was almost immediately subjected to intense harassment.
Retreating before the German army in 1941, Soviet authorities arrested large numbers of Ukrainian Catholic priests, who were either killed or deported to Siberia.
After the Red Army reoccupied western Ukraine in 1944, the Soviet regime liquidated the Ukrainian Catholic Church by arresting its metropolitan, all of its bishops, hundreds of clergy, and the more active faithful, killing some and sending the rest to labor camps, where, with few exceptions, they perished.
At the same time, Soviet authorities forced some of the remaining Greek Catholic clergy to abrogate the union with Rome and subordinate themselves to the Russian Orthodox Church.
Across Eastern Europe following World War II, parts of the former Nazi Germany Axis liberated by the Soviet Red Army and Yugoslav Partisans became one-party Communist states and the project of coercive conversion to atheism continued. The Soviet Union ended its war time truce against the Russian Orthodox Church, and extended its persecutions to the newly Communist Eastern bloc:
“In Poland, Hungary, Lithuania and other Eastern European countries, Catholic leaders who were unwilling to be silent were denounced, publicly humiliated or imprisoned by the Communists. Leaders of the national Orthodox Churches in Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria had to be cautious and submissive”, wrote Geoffrey Blainey in his ‘Short History of Christianity.’
While the churches were generally not as severely treated as they had been in the Soviet Union, nearly all their schools and many of their churches were closed, and they lost their formally prominent roles in public life. Children were taught atheism, and clergy were imprisoned by the thousands. In the Eastern Bloc, Christian churches, along with Jewish synagogues and Islamic mosques were forcibly “converted into museums of atheism.”
According to some sources, the total number of Christian martyrs under the Soviet regime who died in prison camps has been estimated to range around 12 to 20 million.

I grew up in West Roxbury near you in the same time period as you. Brookline and Newton were Jew towns. Boston Latin School closed for Jewish holidays.
My dad and I got involved in the ham radio hobby in the early ‘60’s. We had our ham radio club meetings in Newton.
Every June, there was an event called “field day” in which ham radio operators brought their gas generators and radio equipment to remote locations in the Boston area to demonstrate their prowess in field emergencies.
One incident during field day made a lifetime impression on me!
A young, hooked nosed Jewish boy with horn rimmed glasses proclaimed to me:
“I’m better than you!” I can make more contacts per minute than you can.” He motioned to me to move aside.
I never saw him before, but he was confident of his supreme abilities and position as the best performer.
