What does North Korea have to do with Iran?
Besides having shared resistance to America’s menacing foreign policy…not much, unless the Jews are spinning it.
For out of the blue the JewStreamMedia is jabbering about Iran’s ‘nuclear relation’ to North Korea.
All it took was some shuck and jive.

Jews love that kind of talk…and Matthew Levitt, head of the “Stein Program for Counter-Terrorism,” and Jason Gewirtz on CNBC, poured oil on the flame.
The headline reads:
“If North Korea can get away with building a nuclear weapon, then Iran can too.”
“Officials warn Iran could be the winner in the escalating crisis.”
Wait a minute.
The International Atomic Energy Agency confirms that Iran is in compliance with the nuke deal and has NO plans to build a nuclear weapon.
But shills for Jewish warmongering look for smoking guns that blow no smoke.

Then we’ve got a slew of Jews at the Council on Foreign Relations shucking the jive:
Richard Haass, Ely Ratner, Gideon Rose, Robert Kahn, arguing ever so delicately that one way or another North Korea AND Iran must be stopped.
Follow the dots…it’s all Jewish sleight of hand.
Their boy Trump has been needling both North Korea AND Iran ever since he got cozy with Bibzy last February in DC.
The real issue, I mean, the ‘Jewish’ issue, they talked about?
If Trump fails to stop North Korea, the Iranians will be emboldened to break the nuclear deal, and obtain a nuke.
And a dog that’s mad (a war criminal too) won’t lose any sleep seeing a whole population wiped out.
He did it in Fallujah, what’s another ‘wipe out’ to him?

Which would mean lumping North Korea with Iran as ‘adversary states’ and bomb the “h” out of both of them.
“We can all sleep well at night,” said Tillerson, regarding North Korea’s nukes.

Now, with that out of the way, I can add my 2 cents to the comments here.
The Jews are crossing the line here, lying about the DPRK and Iran. Iran’s Supreme Leader (Sayyed Ali Khameini) already issued a Fatwa (religious decree) forbidding the development, importation and use of nuclear weapons almost a decade ago, stating that the Islamic Republic doesn’t need or want such weapons, but does have highly advanced conventional missiles capable of destroying Israel.
However, Khameini also stated that Iran’s weapons systems are there only as a deterrent and for self-defense. In fact, Iran hasn’t attacked its neighbors in over 400 years.
As for the DPRK, that country’s Supreme Leader (Kim Jong-un) announced he wouldn’t launch any missiles near Guam, with the caveat that President Trump and his warmongering Generals cease threatening his nation. Kim said that all the DPRK wants is to be left alone, since it hasn’t invaded its southern neighbor since 1950.
Someone has to rein in Trump, the Trotskyists aka neocons who surround him, and the Pentagon. Congress won’t do it, because the vast majority of its members are warmongers as well. The crisis in the Korean Peninsula can’t be solved with militaristic threats, since the DPRK has around 60 nuclear bombs, as well as lots of artillery with the capacity of devastating Seoul and its environs.
Seoul’s only 35 miles from the DMZ and N. Korea’s artillery pieces are close enough to destroy S. Korea’s capital. There’s nothing conservative about these warmongers, and they won’t hesitate to take the entire world down with them, should they be on the losing end.
There are only two choices for the US, either turn their swords into plowshares, or commit suicide by attacking the DPRK.
Chinese President Xi Jingping has made it clear that if the US attacks first, China will come to the DPRK’s aid. He also said that if NK attacks first, China will remain neutral. Trump and his administration must heed those warnings coming from Kim Jong-un and Xi very seriously. This isn’t a video game.
I pray every day that this country will come to its senses and return to God; and I know, Br. Nat, that you pray for the same. Please be extra careful at UC Berkeley, as there are plenty of anti-Christians on that campus.

You have quite the knack of finding the Jew Behind the Curtain pushing the levers of power in the most obscure angles.
And indeed Netanyahu was stirring up the cesspool on this very subject back in December with his people in secret meetings on the issue with members of the incoming Trumpeans.

Netanyahu’s road to Iran runs through North Korea
Forget for a moment about moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem, US recognition of the settlement blocs, a closed-eye policy on the pace of construction in the territories and the way the United States has been inspired, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, by the separation barriers that Israel built in the West Bank and along its southern border.
The one truly important story is North Korea. The most senior sources in Israel claim that this is where US President Donald Trump will be tested.
Once the dust settles, the eyes of the world will be watching Trump’s steps to deal with North Korea’s accelerated nuclear armaments program. Top Israeli Cabinet members believe that the outcome of Trump’s dealing with the North Koreans will determine whether international efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear capabilities will be a success or whether they will be a resounding failure.
“If Trump succeeds in stopping North Korea, it would be reasonable to assume that the Iranians will get the hint,” one senior Israeli official told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity.
“On the other hand, if Trump repeats the Obama administration’s failures in handling North Korea, the Iranians will take this as a signal that the world will have to concede to them too at some point. It would make no sense if the North Koreans can have a nuclear arsenal and intercontinental missiles that can strike the United States, while the Iranians cannot.”
The overall Israeli assessment is that this issue will be the focus of talks between Netanyahu and Trump scheduled to take place at the White House in February.
Netanyahu will make every effort to gain Trump’s recognition of the settlement blocs. He will plead with Trump to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem and portray himself as the president’s closest friend, all in an effort to win public support to counter the wave of criminal investigations he currently faces.
The real issue, however, will be Iran as an incarnation of North Korea’s nuclear program. It would be incorrect to think that Netanyahu has forgotten Iran’s program, the definitive issue of his past eight years in power.
“Obama’s failure in dealing with the North Korean nuclear issue was a decisive failure,” a senior Israeli security official told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity. “And it is a failure that could have a snowball effect.” Despite the geographic and ideological distances, Israel is watching North Korea with extreme caution.
It is fully aware that the unpredictable Asian nation is developing intercontinental missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. It is also worried that the North Koreans, who already have several atomic bombs, are now trying to build a hydrogen bomb.
“Trump must stop North Korea,” a senior Israeli minister told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity. “While the eyes of the entire world are focused on this task, this is especially true of the North Koreans’ friends in Tehran. There can be no doubt that if Trump fails, the Iranians will also obtain nuclear capabilities. The question is whether Trump is fully aware of how important this issue really is.”
Just as Netanyahu convinced the entire international community about the importance of the Iranian threat, he will attempt to convince Trump to deal with North Korea, which is an extension of the way the Iranians were handled.
What about the nuclear agreement between Iran and the world powers? Israel’s defense establishment believes that it would be difficult to reopen the agreement for revision. Even the Cabinet believes it is a “mission impossible.”
In December, sources close to Netanyahu held clandestine talks on the issue with members of the incoming administration and others close to Trump. The Israelis proposed an alternative in which the nuclear agreement is turned into a “trip wire’’ — a deterrence strategy shifting responsibility to the opposing side — in the belief that the Iranians will at some point violate the terms of the agreement.
Once that happens, the United States could use the violations as the impetus to restore some sanctions and manufacture a crisis.
The Israelis argued that any US violation of the agreement would run counter to the desired result. Trump and Netanyahu will need to have sensitive talks over this particular issue, and in those talks, the name of a third party is likely to come up: Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Israel is worried about Trump’s warm relationship with Putin. As one top Israeli political source told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity, “The question is who will influence whom? If Putin persuades Trump to soften his attitude toward Iran, it would be a catastrophic strategic development for Israel. If, however, the opposite happens, it would be a positive development.”
There is another subject particularly disconcerting for Israel: Iran’s influence in Syria. Netanyahu is expected to ask Trump to persuade the Russians to prevent Iran from establishing a real presence in Syria in the post-civil war era. “If the [Islamic] Revolutionary Guard [Corps] sets up bases in Syria, if Iran gains ports and anti-aircraft bases there, this would signal a significant deterioration of Israel’s strategic situation,” a senior military official told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity. “We must make sure that Trump is aware of this issue and all of its implications.”
In general, Israel is concerned about Trump handing Israel a few insignificant candies and toys, like moving the embassy to Jerusalem, while cutting a deal with Putin on the truly consequential issues — Iran’s nuclear program and presence in Syria, which could lead to a new conventional front along Israel’s northern border, one that is much more dangerous than previous fronts.
Some in Israel are watching with consternation as the Trump administration takes shape. Almost all of the leading supporters of Israel mentioned as possible candidates for senior positions have been left out of the administration, including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former UN Ambassador John Bolton and former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
The only real pro-Israel appointment is David Friedman, and with all due respect to the prospective ambassador to Israel, what Israel actually needs is a presence in the Pentagon and the State Department. Instead, it has Defense Secretary James Mattis, who declared that the capital of Israel is Tel Aviv, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who has never visited Israel and has close ties with the Arab world because of his past work in the oil industry.
The euphoria in Jerusalem is dissipating. On Jan. 28, Netanyahu tweeted his support for the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico, writing, “President Trump is right.” Although the tweet got him into hot water with the Mexican government and Mexico’s Jewish community, Netanyahu has no real regrets.
It is important for him to stay close to Trump and become his best friend as quickly as possible. Only after the two men meet will it be known if this is possible.

Carl Icahn quit as special advisor to Trump, or whatever he was, apparently becaus Icahn’s hostile takeover of DC didn’t work out the way he wanted.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, early on, Icahn submitted a draft regulatory change of the refining industry that Icahn had long sought strictly for the public good, of course, but as mere happenstance, would also greatly benefit his own refinery, CVG Oil.
“Indeed, out of an abundance of caution, the only issues I ever discussed with you were broad matters of policy affecting the refining industry,” he said in a letter posted online. “I never sought any special benefit for any company with which I have been involved, and have only expressed views that I believed would benefit the refining industry as a whole.”

On August 4, Oil Journal reported that the Environmental Protection Agency is planning to reject a regulatory change that Icahn had long sought.

Under a 2007 law designed to promote ethanol use, refiners must blend mandated levels of renewable fuels like ethanol into gasoline. Refiners that don’t do the required blending themselves must buy credits, on open markets or from other refiners.
Flucturating prices for those credits were hurting refiners like Icahn’s. His two refineries were expected to pay more than $200 million to fulfill their obligations.

IRAN THREATENS TO QUIT NUCLEAR DEAL WITHIN HOURS IF NEW US SANCTIONS IMPOSED

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned this week that Tehran may abandon the 2015 nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), within hours if the U.S. continues imposing new sanctions.
In a speech to parliament on Tuesday, Rouhani said Donald Trump was “not a good partner.”
“Those who try to return to the language of threats and sanctions are prisoners of their past delusions,” Rouhani also said in a televised address. “If they want to go back to that experience, definitely in a short time, not weeks or months, but in the scale of hours and days, we will return to our previous situation very much more stronger.”
Despite Iran’s reported compliance with the JCPOA, the U.S. legislature recently voted overwhelmingly in favor of slapping further sanctions on the Islamic Republic. Donald Trump is also looking to derail the nuclear deal, already alleging that Iran is noncompliant with the JCPOA despite the fact that he certified its compliance just last month.
As the New York Times explained, the U.S. is trying to force Iran out of the nuclear deal:
“That would be an outcome welcomed by the Trump administration. Top officials like Mr. Tillerson and Mr. Mattis have expressed concern about the effect on American relations with European allies if Mr. Trump were to unilaterally pull out, especially after he already announced his intention to back out of the Paris climate change accord that Europeans strongly support.”
“But some advisers to the president argue that if they can provoke Iran into being the one to scrap the nuclear deal, it will leave the United States in a stronger position.” [emphasis added]
It appears this is the provocative policy the Trump administration is currently pursuing. Analysts examining this current news story should necessarily pose the question: why derail the nuclear agreement if Iran is complying? And to what end?
Regardless, Rouhani said Iran would still prefer to stick with the nuclear deal, calling it “a model of victory for peace and diplomacy over war and unilateralism.” As an apparent realist, however, Rouhani warned there were other options.
Iran is already preparing for the collapse of the JCPOA. The country’s parliament recently voted overwhelmingly to increase spending on Tehran’s ballistic missile program and the powerful Revolutionary Guard in retaliation for the new sanctions the U.S. has slapped on the country. According to Al-Jazeera, some politicians even chanted “Death to America” as the vote results were announced.
“The Americans should know that this was our first action,” said speaker Ali Larijani after announcing the majority vote in favor of the package on Sunday.
The JCPOA does not account for Iran’s missile tests, and many media outlets agree that Iran is not violating the agreement by testing and developing its missile technology. To date, the country has only launched one missile into another country’s territory — unlike the United States, which is currently bombing at least seven countries and considering bombing at least three or four more.
Earlier this year, Iran launched a missile strike in Syria in response to a terrorist attack on its own soil ( one should note that Iran’s military presence in Syria is authorized through Iran and Syria’s mutual defense arrangements).
The U.S. has been looking to invade Iran for decades, and Iran has no desire to turn into the next Iraq. Regime change has become an official policy of the Trump administration even though Iran is regarded as one of the only politically stable nations in the region.

Why the US’s 1994 deal with North Korea failed – and what Trump can learn from it
After more than two decades of testing, North Korea finally has a missile that is powerful enough to deliver a nuclear warhead to US territory – that is, to Alaska and/or Hawaii, if estimates are to be believed.
This is an extremely dangerous development, and if the Trump administration is to avoid spiralling into a nuclear confrontation with North Korea, it needs to understand what North Korea wants and why it behaves the way it does.
Fortunately for Trump’s team, there is precedent here. In 1994, the Clinton administration and North Korea signed an Agreed Framework that froze Pyongyang’s nuclear programme and aimed to normalise US-North Korean relations.
The agreement targeted many of the issues that the two sides continue to grapple with – but it soon ran into problems, and ultimately broke down in 2002.
Now, the north is closer than ever to a full-blown nuclear missile capability, and that puts the Trump administration under enormous pressure.
If the White House wants to get its North Korea policy right, it must try and understand why the US’s last best chance to resolve this crisis ultimately didn’t work out.

Under the terms of the 1994 framework, North Korea agreed to freeze and ultimately dismantle its nuclear programme in exchange for “the full normalisation of political and economic relations with the United States”.
This meant four things:
–By 2003, a US-led consortium would build two light-water nuclear reactors in North Korea to compensate for the loss of nuclear power;
–Until then, the US would supply the north with 500,000 tons per year of heavy fuel;
–The US would lift sanctions, remove North Korea from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, and – perhaps most importantly – normalise the political relationship, which is still subject to the terms of the 1953 Korean War armistice;
–Finally, both sides would provide “formal assurances” against the threat or use of nuclear weapons.
For a while, things seemed to be going well. In 1998, US officials involved in the implementation of the agreement testified to Congress that both the US and the International Atomic Energy Agency were satisfied that there had been “no fundamental violation of any aspect of the Framework Agreement” by North Korea.
But on its own pledges, Washington failed to follow through.
Falling short
The light-water reactors were never built. The US-led consortium tasked with constructing them was in severe debt; senators accused Clinton of understating their cost while overstating how much US allies would contribute to funding them. Hawkish Republicans in Congress derided the framework for supposedly rewarding aggressive behaviour.
Heavy fuel shipments were often delayed. Rust Deming, assistant secretary of state, told Congress that “to be frank, we have in past years not always met the fuel year deadline”. Meanwhile, Robert Gallucci, a diplomat who had negotiated the framework, warned that it could fail unless the US did “what it said it would do, which is to take responsibility for the delivery of the heavy fuel oil”.
North Korea was not removed from the State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism until 2008, though it had long met the criteria for removal.
A limited number of US sanctions were eased, but not until 2000 – six years later than pledged in the Agreed Framework. According to Gallucci, Congressional scepticism about the deal led to “the minimum interpretation of sanctions lifting”. As he told a congressional committee: “the North Koreans have always been disappointed that more has not been done by the US.”
Most importantly, no action was taken to formally end the Korean War – which was never technically ended – by replacing the 1953 ceasefire with a peace treaty. The “formal assurances” that the US would not attack North Korea were not provided until six years after the framework was signed.
In the meantime, the Clinton administration unhelpfully persisted in labelling North Korea a “backlash” or “rogue” state, and throughout the 1990s, US military planning was based on the concept of fighting a simultaneous two-front war against Iraq and North Korea.
This only worsened under Washington’s next regime: in 2002, the Bush administration’s Nuclear Posture Review listed North Korea as one country the US might have to use nuclear weapons against, while its 2002 National Security Strategy listed the north as a “rogue” regime against which the US should be prepared to use force.
To this day, the US has 28,500 troops stationed across 11 US military bases in South Korea, and the two countries continue with their joint annual military exercises off the coast of the Korean Peninsula.
As abhorrent as the North Korean regime is, it’s not hard to see why the ruling clique might have concluded that Pyongyang remains in Washington’s crosshairs and that the US was never truly committed to the Agreed Framework.
Still, as subsequent negotiations have shown, North Korea remains desperate for fuel, and its regime still exhibits a paranoid, self-serving obsession with security. Its past actions strongly suggest that the nuclear programme is a bargaining chip that Pyongyang is prepared to give up under the right circumstances.
The benefits of a new, more robust peace agreement are obvious: an end to the threat of nuclear war in East Asia, and a boost to the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.
The story of the 1994 framework proves this is far from impossible, but also that it will demand both careful, determined diplomacy and a commitment to honouring any promises made. Sadly, the Trump administration so far seems capable of neither.

Congress is on a one-month summer recess. You would think that given the recent turmoil over the bill to eliminate Obamacare and the upcoming debate over tax policy the nation’s legislators would be back in their home districts talking to the voters.
Some are, but many are not. “More than fifty” Congressmen are off on an all-expenses paid trip to Israel to demonstrate that “there is no stronger bond with any ally we have.”
Yes indeed, a Congress which cannot pass legislation to benefit the American people finds that it has only one voice when it comes to our troublesome little client state that also doubles as the leading recipient of U.S. tax dollars in the world.
How do they do it? They do it by relentless courting of the Congress critters and media talking heads, all of whom know how to repay a favor. Some readers might be asking how Congress (spouses included) can accept these free trips from a foreign government?
The current trip is estimated to be costing $10,000 per person. Well, the answer is that they can’t do it directly, which would be illegal, so the clever rascals at the American Israel Political Affairs Committee (AIPAC) have created an “charitable” foundation that pays the bills.
It’s called the American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF). AIEF is a tax exempt 501(c)3 foundation that had income of more than $80 million in 2015.
As it is tax exempt that means that its activities are, in effect, being subsidized by the U.S. Treasury so the congressmen are being “charitably educated” while they are also being wined and dined and propagandized in part on the taxpayers’ dime.
A couple of the Congress critters hardly hit the ground before they were singing the praises of their hosts, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy crooning “We have shared values! Shared security interests! No stronger bond!” And plenty of feel-good all around as Israel is “The Only Democracy in the Middle East!”
Democratic House Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland, who has had his head up the Israeli derriere for decades, was also quick on the uptake, enthusing how support for Israel is completely bipartisan, “We are not here as Democrats and Republicans, we are here as Americans who support Israel’s security, its sovereignty and the safety of its people.”
And as if it is not enough to go around bragging how one is subordinating U.S. sovereignty to that of Israel, the gnomes are hard at work back at home preparing to pass into law the Israel Anti-Boycott Act, which will criminalize for many Americans their First Amendment right to criticize Israel.
And it is a completely bipartisan bit of new legislation being pushed by the Israeli government that will take away aid currently given to the Palestinians as long as the Palestinian Authority continues to provide subsidies to help support the families of those individuals being held prisoner by the Israelis.
As most aid actually goes towards training Palestinian security forces that are intended to prevent terror attacks against Israelis, the bill is as wrong-headed as can be, but it just goes to show how far Congress will go to punish Arabs on behalf of Israel.
And finally there has been a series of Israel-centric attacks on leading members of the Trump Administration. A month ago, the State Department released its annual Country Reports on Terrorism for 2016.
The report, as always, describes threats of violence in the Middle East from an Israeli perspective, but it was honest enough to also include two sentences that state that:
“Continued drivers of violence included a lack of hope in achieving Palestinian statehood, Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank, settler violence against Palestinians…and IDF tactics that the Palestinians considered overly aggressive. The PA has [also] taken significant steps…to not create or disseminate content that incites violence.”
B’nai B’rith immediately blasted the report for “parroting the false Palestinian narrative” and the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) demanded that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson resign because the report was “bigoted, biased, anti-Semitic, Israel hating, error ridden.”
ZOA went on to praise the co-chairman of the Republican Israel Caucus, Congressman Peter Roskam for demanding that the State Department correct the “numerous mischaracterizations” in the report.
Tillerson has long been a target of the American-Jewish media because of the perception that oil company executives are traditionally not friendly to Israel.
There have also been claims that he is “less hard” on Iran than the Israel Lobby would like. But what Tillerson is really experiencing is the hard truth regarding Israel: that its Lobby and friends in Congress are both unrelenting and unforgiving. Even when they get 90% of the pie they are furious over someone else getting 10%.
Donald Trump’s National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster has also been under siege for the past several weeks and his “loyalty” to Israel is now under the microscope.
McMaster made the mistake of firing three National Security Council officials that were brought in by his predecessor Michael Flynn.
The three – Ezra Cohen-Watnick, Rich Higgins, and Derek Harvey – are all regarded by the Israel Lobby as passionately pro-Israel and virulently anti-Iran.
It was therefore inevitable that McMaster would take some heat, but the “speed and intensity” of the attacks has surprised even The Atlantic, which failed to note in its thorough examination of the development that while much of the anger flows from extreme right-wing sources there is also considerable pressure coming directly from friends of Israel.
It is interesting to note just how and by whom the argument against McMaster is being framed.
Caroline Glick, an American-born Israeli journalist who might reasonably be described as extreme right wing, has led the charge in a posting that described McMaster as “deeply hostile to Israel.”
She cites anonymous sources to claim that he refers to Israel as an occupying power and also has the audacity to claim that there once existed a place called Palestine. Oh, and he apparently also supports the nuclear agreement with Iran, as does Tillerson.
McMaster’s other crimes consist of allegedly altering the agenda of Donald Trump’s recent trip to Israel in ways that are somewhat arcane but which no doubt contributed to Glick’s sense of grievance.
What is most interesting, however, is the unstated premise supporting Glick’s point of view, which is that the United States national security team should be subject to approval by Israel.
Her view is not dissimilar to what lies behind the attacks on Tillerson and the real irony is that neither Tillerson nor McMaster has actually demonstrated any genuine animosity towards Israel, so the whole process is part of a perverse mindset that inevitably sees nearly everything as a threat.
We Americans are way beyond the point where we might simply demand that Israel and its partisans butt out of our politics.
Israel-firsters are literally deeply embedded everywhere in the media, in politics at all levels, in academia, and in the professions.
They are well funded and highly disciplined to respond to any threats to their hegemony.
Their policy is to never give an inch on anything relating to Israel and their relentless grinding is characteristic of how they behave.
The Israel Lobby controls Congress and can literally get any bill it wants through the legislature.
And it also has its hooks in the White House, though the unpredictable Trump obviously makes many American Zionists nervous because it is rightly believed that once the president takes a position on anything he cannot be trusted either to understand what he has committed to or to stick with it subsequently.
So what is to be done? To match the passion of the Israel Lobby we Americans have to become passionate ourselves.
Do what they do but in reverse. Write letters to congressmen and newspapers opposing the junkets to Israel.
When a Congress critter has a town hall, show up and complain about our involvement in the Middle East. Keep mentioning the pocket book issues, i.e. how Israel costs the taxpayer $9 million a day.
Explain how its behavior puts our diplomats and soldiers overseas in danger. The reality is that Israel is built on a lot of lies promoted by people who frequently cite the holocaust every time they turn around but who have no actual regard for humanity outside their own tribe.
The hypocrisy must stop if the United States is to survive as a nation. Pandering to Israel and engaging in constant wars to directly or indirectly defend it, be they against Iran or in Syria, will wear our country down and erode our freedoms. We are already on a slippery slope and it is past time to put our own interests first.

CBS synopsis: A year ago, Paul O’Neill was fired from his job as George Bush’s Treasury Secretary for disagreeing too many times with the president’s policy on tax cuts.
Now, O’Neill – who is known for speaking his mind – talks for the first time about his two years inside the Bush administration.
His story is the centerpiece of a new book being published this week about the way the Bush White House is run.
Entitled “The Price of Loyalty,” the book by a former Wall Street Journal reporter draws on interviews with high-level officials who gave the author their personal accounts of meetings with the president, their notes and documents. [Simon and Schuster, the book’s publisher, and CBSNews.com, are both units of Viacom.]
But the main source of the book was Paul O’Neill. Correspondent Lesley Stahl reports.
Paul O’Neill says he is going public because he thinks the Bush Administration has been too secretive about how decisions have been made.
Will this be seen as a “kiss-and-tell” book?
“I’ve come to believe that people will say damn near anything, so I’m sure somebody will say all of that and more,” says O’Neill, who was George Bush’s top economic policy official.
In the book, O’Neill says that the president did not make decisions in a methodical way: there was no free-flow of ideas or open debate.
At cabinet meetings, he says the president was “like a blind man in a roomful of deaf people. There is no discernible connection,” forcing top officials to act “on little more than hunches about what the president might think.”
This is what O’Neill says happened at his first hour-long, one-on-one meeting with Mr. Bush:
“I went in with a long list of things to talk about, and I thought to engage on and as the book says, I was surprised that it turned out me talking, and the president just listening … As I recall, it was mostly a monologue.”
He also says that President Bush was disengaged, at least on domestic issues, and that disturbed him. And he says that wasn’t his experience when he worked as a top official under Presidents Nixon and Ford, or the way he ran things when he was chairman of Alcoa.
O’Neill readily agreed to tell his story to the book’s author Ron Suskind – and he adds that he’s taking no money for his part in the book.
Suskind says he interviewed hundreds of people for the book – including several cabinet members.
O’Neill is the only one who spoke on the record, but Suskind says that someone high up in the administration – Donald Rumsfeld – warned O’Neill not to do this book.
Was it a warning, or a threat?
“I don’t think so. I think it was the White House concerned,” says Suskind. “Understandably, because O’Neill has spent extraordinary amounts of time with the president. They said, ‘This could really be the one moment where things are revealed.'”
Not only did O’Neill give Suskind his time, he gave him 19,000 internal documents.
“Everything’s there: Memoranda to the President, handwritten “thank you” notes, 100-page documents. Stuff that’s sensitive,” says Suskind, adding that in some cases, it included transcripts of private, high-level National Security Council meetings. “You don’t get higher than that.”
And what happened at President Bush’s very first National Security Council meeting is one of O’Neill’s most startling revelations.
“From the very beginning, there was a conviction, that Saddam Hussein was a bad person and that he needed to go,” says O’Neill, who adds that going after Saddam was topic “A” 10 days after the inauguration – eight months before Sept. 11.
“From the very first instance, it was about Iraq. It was about what we can do to change this regime,” says Suskind. “Day one, these things were laid and sealed.”
As treasury secretary, O’Neill was a permanent member of the National Security Council. He says in the book he was surprised at the meeting that questions such as “Why Saddam?” and “Why now?” were never asked.
“It was all about finding a way to do it. That was the tone of it. The president saying ‘Go find me a way to do this,'” says O’Neill. “For me, the notion of pre-emption, that the U.S. has the unilateral right to do whatever we decide to do, is a really huge leap.”
And that came up at this first meeting, says O’Neill, who adds that the discussion of Iraq continued at the next National Security Council meeting two days later.
He got briefing materials under this cover sheet. “There are memos. One of them marked, secret, says, ‘Plan for post-Saddam Iraq,'” adds Suskind, who says that they discussed an occupation of Iraq in January and February of 2001.
Based on his interviews with O’Neill and several other officials at the meetings, Suskind writes that the planning envisioned peacekeeping troops, war crimes tribunals, and even divvying up Iraq’s oil wealth.
He obtained one Pentagon document, dated March 5, 2001, and entitled “Foreign Suitors for Iraqi Oilfield contracts,” which includes a map of potential areas for exploration.
“It talks about contractors around the world from, you know, 30-40 countries. And which ones have what intentions,” says Suskind. “On oil in Iraq.”
During the campaign, candidate Bush had criticized the Clinton-Gore Administration for being too interventionist: “If we don’t stop extending our troops all around the world in nation-building missions, then we’re going to have a serious problem coming down the road. And I’m going to prevent that.”
“The thing that’s most surprising, I think, is how emphatically, from the very first, the administration had said ‘X’ during the campaign, but from the first day was often doing ‘Y,'” says Suskind. “Not just saying ‘Y,’ but actively moving toward the opposite of what they had said during the election.”
The president had promised to cut taxes, and he did. Within six months of taking office, he pushed a trillion dollars worth of tax cuts through Congress.
But O’Neill thought it should have been the end. After 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan, the budget deficit was growing.
So at a meeting with the vice president after the mid-term elections in 2002, Suskind writes that O’Neill argued against a second round of tax cuts.
“Cheney, at this moment, shows his hand,” says Suskind. “He says, ‘You know, Paul, Reagan proved that deficits don’t matter. We won the mid-term elections, this is our due.’ … O’Neill is speechless.”
“It was not just about not wanting the tax cut. It was about how to use the nation’s resources to improve the condition of our society,” says O’Neill. “And I thought the weight of working on Social Security and fundamental tax reform was a lot more important than a tax reduction.”
Did he think it was irresponsible? “Well, it’s for sure not what I would have done,” says O’Neill.
The former treasury secretary accuses Vice President Dick Cheney of not being an honest broker, but, with a handful of others, part of “a praetorian guard that encircled the president” to block out contrary views.
“This is the way Dick likes it,” says O’Neill.
Meanwhile, the White House was losing patience with O’Neill. He was becoming known for a series of off-the-cuff remarks his critics called gaffes. One of them sent the dollar into a nosedive and required major damage control.
Twice during stock market meltdowns, O’Neill was not available to the president: He was out of the country – one time on a trip to Africa with the Irish rock star Bono.
“Africa made an enormous splash. It was like a road show,” says Suskind. “He comes back and the president says to him at a meeting, ‘You know, you’re getting quite a cult following.’ And it clearly was not a joke. And it was not said in jest.”
Suskind writes that the relationship grew tenser and that the president even took a jab at O’Neill in public, at an economic forum in Texas.
The two men were never close. And O’Neill was not amused when Mr. Bush began calling him “The Big O.” He thought the president’s habit of giving people nicknames was a form of bullying.
Everything came to a head for O’Neill at a November 2002 meeting at the White House of the economic team.
“It’s a huge meeting. You got Dick Cheney from the, you know, secure location on the video. The President is there,” says Suskind, who was given a nearly verbatim transcript by someone who attended the meeting.
He says everyone expected Mr. Bush to rubber stamp the plan under discussion: a big new tax cut. But, according to Suskind, the president was perhaps having second thoughts about cutting taxes again, and was uncharacteristically engaged.
“He asks, ‘Haven’t we already given money to rich people? This second tax cut’s gonna do it again,'” says Suskind.
“He says, ‘Didn’t we already, why are we doing it again?’ Now, his advisers, they say, ‘Well Mr. President, the upper class, they’re the entrepreneurs. That’s the standard response.’
And the president kind of goes, ‘OK.’ That’s their response. And then, he comes back to it again. ‘Well, shouldn’t we be giving money to the middle, won’t people be able to say, ‘You did it once, and then you did it twice, and what was it good for?'”
But according to the transcript, White House political advisor Karl Rove jumped in.
“Karl Rove is saying to the president, a kind of mantra. ‘Stick to principle. Stick to principle.’ He says it over and over again,” says Suskind. “Don’t waver.”
In the end, the president didn’t. And nine days after that meeting in which O’Neill made it clear he could not publicly support another tax cut, the vice president called and asked him to resign.
With the deficit now climbing towards $400 billion [2004], O’Neill maintains he was in the right.
But look at the economy today.
“Yes, well, in the last quarter the growth rate was 8.2 percent. It was terrific,” says O’Neill.
“I think the tax cut made a difference. But without the tax cut, we would have had 6 percent real growth, and the prospect of dealing with transformation of Social Security and fundamentally fixing the tax system. And to me, those were compelling competitors for, against more tax cuts.”
While in the book O’Neill comes off as constantly appalled at Mr. Bush, he was surprised when Stahl told him she found his portrait of the president unflattering.
“Hmmm, you really think so,” asks O’Neill, who says he isn’t joking. “Well, I’ll be darned.”
“You’re giving me the impression that you’re just going to be stunned if they attack you for this book,” says Stahl to O’Neill. “And they’re going to say, I predict, you know, it’s sour grapes. He’s getting back because he was fired.”
“I will be really disappointed if they react that way because I think they’ll be hard put to,” says O’Neill.
Is he prepared for it?
“Well, I don’t think I need to be because I can’t imagine that I’m going to be attacked for telling the truth,” says O’Neill. “Why would I be attacked for telling the truth?”
White House spokesman Scott McClellan was asked about the book on Friday and said “The president is someone that leads and acts decisively on our biggest priorities and that is exactly what he’ll continue to do.”

I believe that Andrew Hamilton once referenced the Liberty Lobby’s book Conspiracy Against Freedom: A Documentation of One Campaign of the Anti-Defamation League Against Freedom of Speech and Thought in America (1986) as playing a significant role in his awakening to the Jewish problem; the conspiracy in question was one in which the ADL drove the Liberty Lobby’s radio program off the airwaves.
It’s blatantly obvious that some kind of conspiracy is responsible for the deplatforming and demonetizing of multiple White nationalist and alt right websites in recent days.

Previously, we were not openly perceived as being sufficiently significant to raise a force against. And we didn’t even do this ourselves. Our enemy did it for us. What the South can learn from postwar Europe.

(Excerpt): In the years immediately following its surrender to Allied forces in World War II, Germany underwent a much different process from the American South in the wake of the Civil War.
Whereas the vast majority of Confederate civilian and military officials suffered no greater penalty than the confiscation of property and temporary loss of voting rights, in Germany, top military and government officials were tried and sentenced to prison or execution.

In the Western zone, U.S. and British administrators established de-Nazification panels and filtered through 16 million questionnaires. They identified 3.5 million former Nazis, many of whom were fired from government posts.
Libraries were stripped of Nazi books and periodicals, fascist newspapers shuttered, and all physical vestiges of the old regime removed and destroyed.
In 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) criminalized the display of swastikas; the symbol was also scraped and sometimes blown off of buildings.
The federal state systematically destroyed statues and monuments, razed many Nazi architectural structures and buried executed military and civilian officials in mass, unmarked graves so that their resting grounds would not become Nazi shrines.
If the physical de-Nazification of Germany was absolute—and it was—it proved harder to effect a spiritual purge of the country’s recent fascist past.
To rebuild the country, American occupiers found that it was all but impossible to “find reasonably competent Germans who had not been affiliated or associated in some way with the Nazi regime,” according to General Lucius Clay.
In Cologne, fully 18 of the 21 employees of the city waterworks were former Nazis; American authorities faced a stark choice—let the city’s supply of potable water go dry, or let the Nazis keep their jobs.
The answer was obvious. Towns and cities needed to be administered. The court system needed to function. Police departments required staff. Children needed to attend school.
Though half of all Bavarian teachers were initially fired for their Nazi membership, by 1948 most of them were back in the classroom. Fully 94 percent of Bavarian judges and prosecutors were ex-Nazis, and one-third of foreign ministry employees in Bonn, the West German capital.
Though statues had been blown up and flags burned or shredded, many Germans in the 1950s resisted political reeducation. Allied officials sometimes required adults to view [Psychological Warfare Department propaganda-Kj] footage of liberated concentration camps before they could receive ration cards; one memoirist recalled that most of the people he sat with in a theater in Frankfurt turned their heads and simply refused to watch the film.
Five years after the war, surveys revealed that one-third of the country thought the Nuremberg war crime trials had been “unfair.” Majorities believed that Nazism had been a “good idea, badly applied,” and consistently, over a third of the population continued to prefer that the country be free of Jews.
As late as 1955, 48 percent of respondents felt that Hitler would have been one of Germany’s greatest leaders, “but for the war.”
The physical destruction of iconography, in other words, was no instant antidote to extremist ideology.
It wasn’t until the 1960s and 1970s that Germany reckoned fully with the moral weight of its Nazi legacy.
A string of events thrust the topic into full consciousness, from belated public investigations into German war crimes on the eastern front, to Israel’s capture and trial of Adolf Eichmann and criminal trials in Frankfurt of Auschwitz concentration camp guards.
During the first 15 years of the postwar era, German schools buried any mention of the Holocaust or other Nazi atrocities; later, they slowly incorporated such subject matter in the curriculum.
The Six-Day War, Yom Kippur War and massacre of Israeli athletes during the 1972 Olympic games in Munich generated widespread empathy toward Israel.
When West German television ran a gauzy American miniseries, Holocaust, in 1979, 20 million viewers watched all four evenings of the broadcast.
The production was dreadful, but it galvanized German public opinion in a way that the much-higher-quality series [the fictional-Kj] Roots compelled many Americans to examine the legacy of slavery two years earlier.
The generation of Germans that came of age in the 1970s and 1980s confronted the country’s Nazi past and forcefully repudiated it. It took several decades of hard self-reflection, but a reunified Germany emerged from the Cold War as one of the great mainstays of democracy and human rights.

If just removing statues and icons doesn’t force a change in outlook, venerating and fetishizing them, and refusing to be honest about their meaning, almost ensures that the country won’t fully confront its past.
The Southern Poverty Law Center rightly points out that the vast majority of statues, streets and schools dedicated to the memory of the Confederacy date from the period between 1890 and 1930—four decades when the legal, cultural and political edifice of Jim Crow was under heavy construction.
Another memorial spate followed after 1954, in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education and, coincidentally, the 100th anniversary of the war’s outbreak.
The statues were blunt instruments in institutionalizing white supremacy and blotting out the dual sins of treason and slavery.
In recent days, prominent “never-Trump” Republican [neocon] operatives have taken the unusual step of advising Democrats not to fall into a monument trap.
The president wants to turn the conversation to Confederate kitsch, which many white Americans continue to view as benign and non-ideological.
Focus instead on Trump’s oddly solicitous posture toward Nazis, Klansmen and heavily armed “militiamen” playing dress up in front of synagogues and places of public accommodation.
It’s probably smart political advice, but it still elides the central problem.

‘New strategy?’ Naah. SAME thing as the past 16 years — if this doesn’t work, try that.
It’s the longest war in US history already, only now we won’t set dates for Trump’s Forever War in Afghanistan. “We are not nation-building again,” says Trump, “we are killing terrorists.”
And the more “terrorists” you “kill,” dear Donald, the more “terrorists” will multiply. It’s that ‘war on terror’ that just won’t quit. You’re a globalist now, Mr Trump, and the Jewish-controlled war party (cruise missile dems and kill ’em all repubs,) got you under their thumb.
We’re sending ‘dozens’ of Marines (or ‘hundreds,’ maybe ‘thousands,’ but Trump’s not telling.) Oh, that’ll scare the Taliban who have control of about 45% of Afghanistan which just vowed to “turn Afghanistan into a US graveyard.”
Afghanistan is known as the “Graveyard of Empires.” It will soon become the graveyard of Trump’s presidency.
Mattis the Dog, with the “expanded authority” Trump is granting him, wants thousands of troops, so that means mission creep as he slides a few hundred in at a time with a little here, a little there, with appropriations snuck into congressional bills, and poached from the federal budget, or clawed back from non-accountable dark money from the CIA’s stash of Afghan opium bucks.
We’ll stay there until the Afghanis love us, or until we get a fully trained and reliable Afghan National Defense and Security Forces, whichever comes first.
DON’T Hold your breath for either. The more military operations the US conducts the more the local people come to hate Jewmerica and join the “terrorists.” The US is a great recruiter for the Taliban, just as it was for al-Qaeda and it’s daughter, ISIS, which is gaining a foothold in Afghanistan, too.
Mattis wants to take a ‘regional approach’ involving Pakistan and India to combating the Taliban and an offshoot of ISIS, called Islamic State-Khorasan Province. The key player in the regional approach is neighboring Pakistan, per General Dunsford, which won’t work “unless we have a higher degree of cooperation from Pakistan,” says he.
When Pakistan doesn’t crack down enough to Presidents Mattis’ and McMaster’s, er Trump’s, satisfaction, this means Mattis will have to pull out the plans for direct US military operations in Pakistan. That’s a Forever War worth flip-flopping for.
Obama’s drone war didn’t work murdering non-combatant Pakistanis and refugee Afghanis in Pakistan. More people who hate Jewmerica joined the Taliban, al Qaeda, or ISIS.
Trump’s new “strategy” doesn’t say how he’s going to get Pakistan to change current policies, either.
And now Bannon’s Breitbart ain’t too happy about it all. Indeed, Trump’s Breitbart base resents Trump’s radical flip-flopping speech that contradicts his promise to end the Afghanistan war and pull the troops out.
And Ann Coulter, a former Trump fan, tweeted: “It doesn’t matter who you vote for. The military-industrial complex wins.”
Right. Who benefits? JEWS. Time for the US to cut its losses in more ways than one.
The Lies on Afghanistan
There has never been progress by the U.S. military in Afghanistan, unless you are asking the U.S. military contractors or the Afghan drug barons, of whom an extremely large share are our allies in the Afghan government, militias and security forces, there has only been suffering and destruction.
American politicians, pundits and generals will speak about “progress” made by the 70,000 American troops put into Afghanistan by President Obama beginning in 2009, along with an additional 30,000 European troops and 100,000 private contractors.
However the hard and awful true reality is that the war in Afghanistan has only escalated since 2009, never stabilizing or deescalating.
The Taliban has increased in strength by tens of thousands, despite tens of thousands of casualties and prisoners.
American and Afghan casualties have continued to grow every year of the conflict, with U.S. casualties declining only when U.S. forces began to withdraw in mass numbers from parts of Afghanistan in 2011, while Afghan security forces and civilians have experienced record casualties every year since those numbers began to be kept by the UN.
Similarly, any progress in reconstructing or developing Afghanistan has been found to be non existent despite the more than $100 billion spent by the United States on such efforts by the Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction (SIGAR).
$100 billion, by the way, is more money than was spent on the Marshall Plan when that post-WWII reconstruction plan is put into inflation adjusted dollars.
Oft repeated claims, such as millions of Afghan school girls going to school, millions of Afghans having access to improved health care and Afghan life expectancy dramatically increasing, and the construction of an Afghan job building economy have been exposed as nothing more than public relations lies.
Often displayed as modern Potemkin Villages to visiting journalists and congressional delegations and utilized to justify continued budgets for the Pentagon and USAID, and, so, to allow for more killing, like America’s reconstruction program in Iraq, the reconstruction program in Afghanistan has proven to be a failure.
Its supposed achievements [are] shown to be virtually non-existent, as documented by multiple investigations by SIGAR, as well as by investigators and researchers from organizations such as the UN, EU, IMF, World Bank, etc.
Tonight, the American people will hear again the great lie about the progress the American military once made in Afghanistan after “the Afghan Surge”, just as we often hear the lie about how the American military had “won” in Iraq.
In Iraq it was a political compromise that brought about a cessation of hostilities for a few short years and it was the collapse of the political balance that had been struck that led to the return to the violence of the last several years.
In Afghanistan there has never even been an attempt at such a political solution and all the Afghan people have seen in the last eight years, every year, has been a worsening of the violence.
Americans will also hear tonight how the U.S. military has done great things for the Afghan people.
You would be hard pressed to find many Afghans outside of the incredibly corrupt and illegitimate government, a better definition of a kleptocracy you will not find, that the U.S. keeps in power with its soldiers and $35 billion a year, who would agree with the statements of the American politicians, the American generals and the pundits, the latter of which are mostly funded, directly or indirectly, by the military companies.
It is important to remember that for three straight elections in Afghanistan the United States government has supported shockingly fraudulent elections, allowing American soldiers to kill and die while presidential and parliamentary elections were brazenly stolen.
It is also important to remember that many members of the Afghan government are themselves warlords and drug barons, many of them guilty of some of the worst human rights abuses and war crimes, the same abuses of which the Taliban are guilty, while the current Ghani government, and the previous Karzai government, have allowed egregious crimes to continue against women, including laws that allow men to legally rape their wives.
Whatever President Trump announces tonight about Afghanistan, a decision he teased on Twitter, as if the announcement were a new retail product launch or television show episode, as opposed to the somber and painful reality of war, we can be assured the lies about American progress in Afghanistan will continue.
The lies about America’s commitment to human rights and democratic values will continue.
The profits of the military companies and drug barons will also continue.
And of course the suffering of the Afghan people will surely continue.

Now, with that out of the way, I’ll comment on the current tensions between the USSA and the DPRK. I totally agree with Br. Nat in that the USAF’s bombers dropped hundreds of thousands of WMDs on N. Korean territory, incinerating and/or blowing to bits of at least 600,000 people and bombing the country back into the Stone Age.
Also, US troops chased the retreating NK troops all the way to the Chinese border, which in turn, brought Chinese reserve troops pouring into NK and chasing the Americans back to S. Korea’s border. Not long afterward, an armistice was signed, ending the fighting, but not the war itself.
The DPRK’s leaders, including Kim Jong-un, his father and grandfather, called for a peace treaty. And so far, this treaty has yet to be signed. Had such a treaty been signed back in 1953, we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re currently in with the DPRK.
I also agree that Zionist Jews are behind this crisis. The DPRK doesn’t have a Rothschild Central Bank; neither do Iran, Syria, Cuba and Venezuela. The USSA’s unable to defeat either Iran, the DPRK or Syria.
It’s long time past that ALL USSA bases overseas were closed down and the troops brought back home .. this includes S. Korea, Japan and Germany.

Indian Punchline: Afghanistan is Ripe for Proxy War
Russia has hinted in the past that the United States is covertly sponsoring the Islamic State in Afghanistan.
On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson raised the bar by alleging that “foreign fighters” who were transferred by “unknown helicopters” have perpetrated a massacre of Hazara Shias in the Sar-e-Pol province in northern Afghanistan. The spokesperson said:
“We can see attempts to stir up ethnic conflict in the country…
Cases of unidentified helicopter flights to territory controlled by extremists in other northern provinces of Afghanistan are also recorded.
“For example, there is evidence that on August 8, four helicopters made flights from the airbase of the Afghan National Army’s 209th corps in Mazar-i-Sharif to the area captured by the militants in the Aqcha district of the Jowzjan province.
“It is noteworthy that witnesses of these flights began to fall off the radar of law enforcement agencies. It seems that the command of the NATO forces controlling the Afghan sky stubbornly refuses to notice these incidents.”
From the above, it appears that sections of the Afghan armed forces and the NATO command (which controls Afghan air space) are hand in glove in these covert operations. No doubt, this is a very serious allegation.
The attack on the Hazara Shias must be taken as a message intended for Tehran. Historically and culturally, Iran has affinities with the Hazara Shia community in Afghanistan.
Possibly, the Trump administration, which has vowed to overthrow the Iranian regime, is opening a ‘second front’ by the IS against Iran from the east.
Interestingly, Russian Foreign Ministry also issued a statement on Friday on the alarming drug situation in Afghanistan. It pointed out that:
— A sharp increase in drug production is expected in Afghanistan this year and one-third of the country’s population is now involved in cultivation of opium poppy.
— The geography of the Afghan drug trafficking has expanded and now reaches African continent.
— Tonnes of chemicals for processing narcotics are illegally imported into Afghanistan – with Italy, France and Netherlands “among main suppliers”.
— The US and NATO are either unwilling or incapable of curbing the illegal activity.
Russia and Iran cannot turn a blind eye to the hostile activities by the US (and NATO) in their backyard, transforming the anti-Taliban war into a proxy war.
They cannot but view the Afghan conflict through the prism of their deepening tensions with the US.
What are Russia’s options? The Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at a meeting with the top brass in Moscow on August 18 that the Afghan conflict poses a threat to Central Asia’s stability.
He said that Russia plans to hold joint military exercises later this year with Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Russia has military bases in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
Again, Ambassador Zamir Kabulov, Russian presidential envoy to Afghanistan, said recently that if the Afghan government and the US are unable to counter the IS threat, Russia will resort to military force.
Kabulov disclosed that Russia has raised in the UN Security Council the air dropping of supplies for the IS fighters in at least three provinces in northern Afghanistan by unidentified aircraft.
Of course, it is inconceivable that Russia will put “boots on the ground” in Afghanistan. But if the IS breaches the borders of the Central Asian states, it becomes the “red line”, Russia will hit back.
Russia is reinforcing its bases in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
Significantly, in a joint military exercise with Tajikistan in July, Russia tested its Iskander-M short-range ballistic missiles, one of the most advanced weapons in the Russian arsenal, with a range of 500 kilometers and a payload of 700 kg.
Iskander is equipped with terminal guidance systems with the capability to overcome missile defences. Iskander’s accuracy could be better than 10 meters. (Russia has deployed the deadly weapon to Syria.)
With the exit of White House strategist Steve Bannon, an inveterate anti-war ideologue in the Trump administration who wanted the Afghan war to be brought to an end, the generals now have the upper hand in controlling the US policy.
Defence Secretary James Mattis and National Security Advisor HR McMaster favour deployment of additional troops to Afghanistan.
The ‘known unknown’ is John Kelly, whom Trump recently appointed as his chief of staff. But there are enough indications that Kelly (a retired Marine Corps general and father of a fallen Marine, 1st Lt. Robert Kelly, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010) almost certainly shares the opinion of Mattis and McMaster.
The more one looks at it, President Donald Trump’s real challenge is not about winning the war against the Taliban, but the high risk he’ll be incurring, by taking his generals’ advice, to put his imprimatur on a full-fledged proxy war in Afghanistan against Russia, Iran and China.

Antimedia: Military-Industrial Complex Stock Prices Surge After Trump’s Afghan War Speech
(ANTIMEDIA Op-ed) After years of repeatedly condemning America’s involvement in Afghanistan, President Trump announced his intention this week to ramp up military operations there.
Though Barack Obama adopted the exact same policy shortly after taking office in 2009, imposing a 30,000 troop surge to no avail, Trump is following the same failed path.
Despite the president’s repeated vows to “win,” there is little victory for soldiers who have suffered multiple tours of duty, Afghani civilians who have endured occupation and abuse from the U.S. military and other terrorist factions (whose influence is a result of failed American foreign policy), and the American people, who have poured billions of dollars into the United States’ longest war only to find terrorist groups have flourished.
So who is actually winning? It should come as no surprise that defense stocks surged on Tuesday amid the news of Trump’s own surge.
CNBC reported:
“Northrop Grumman stock rose 1 percent, while Lockheed Martin and Boeing advanced more than 0.7 percent. Boeing and Northrop were also awarded contracts for intercontinental ballistic missile system replacements.”
Those IBCM contracts are worth over $300 million each, making it clear why defense stocks rally when war is imminent.
The three companies enjoying stock market gains have found riches in American militarism for decades, living off the taxpayer and the United States’ longstanding obsession with violently policing the world.
[Not to be forgotten, the MIC has enjoyed gains bought with the shed blood, maiming, disability, and psychological damage of the American soldier, and all too often, the destruction of family when he or she comes home.

Despite the president’s previous calls to cut wasteful spending in government, the Pentagon he continues to prop up is one of the worst perpetrators of inefficiency and careless expenditures, which can be traced back to its heavy reliance on contractors.
As the Harvard Political Review summarized:
“Reports from the Inspector Generals’ offices of Iraq and Afghanistan estimate that the U.S. military has lost $60 billion to waste and fraud in Iraq, $100 billion to Afghan reconstruction efforts, and billions more in wasted equipment either burned or left behind after the withdrawal of forces.
“Part of the problem may be that the Pentagon has 1.7 million contracts open, which makes oversight difficult, if not impossible.”
In one specific example of fraud and waste, Reuters reported last August that the U.S. Army had deceitfully manipulated their books.
“The Defense Department’s Inspector General, in a June report, said the Army made $2.8 trillion in wrongful adjustments to accounting entries in one quarter alone in 2015, and $6.5 trillion for the year,” the outlet explained.
Further, considering the president routinely decried special interests in D.C. and vowed to drain the swamp, his decision to perpetuate an industry dependent on government spending demonstrates his lack of sincerity.
The Harvard Political Review noted in 2016 that the defense industry is the 8th largest lobby in the country, spending over $100 million per year.
“Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell International, and Northrop Grumman are among the top spenders.”
Despite the corruption, special interests, and revolving doors built into the foundation of America’s military-industrial complex, those who perpetrate it continue to profit off of ill-fated wars with no end in sight.
In June, Fortune noted the likelihood that defense stocks would increase in value amid the reign of President Trump.
This is predictable considering he quickly ramped up wars and his administration has advocated nation-building despite his general contention during the election campaign that the failed practice was unwise.
“Boeing has seen its stock rise 31% since the presidential election,” Fortune noted.
“The S&P 500 aerospace and defense index is up more than 21% over the same span, nearly double the returns of the broader market.
“Now investors believe that Trump could be the best thing to happen to the sector in years, with the Commander-in-Chief promising ‘historic’ increases in U.S. defense spending (which has declined 17%, to $585 billion, since its peak in 2011) and an enormous expansion of the U.S. Navy to 350 ships, up from the current 275.”
“We’re in the early innings of a defense up cycle,” said Jason Adams, an aerospace and defense analyst at T. Rowe Price, Fortune reported.
This is unsurprising. Defense stocks also enjoyed gains after Trump launched a missile strike in Syria in April and after he made grandiose threats against North Korea earlier this month.
While defense contractors continue to profit and “win,” the nation at large continues to lose (in one example, defense companies earn big off of arms deals with countries like Saudi Arabia, which is implicated in the growth and funding of ISIS).
As former general and President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned when he left office:
“In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”
Nearly sixty years later, his warnings have gone entirely unheeded.
