World War 3 could be just around the corner.
If it comes down to it, the ‘establishment’ will use a catastrophe in a desperate attempt to keep troublesome Trump out, and put Hillary in.
It’s a matter of what sets it off.
The prelude is US sabre rattling against Russia and the overture is sharpening its swords in Syria.

US officials are going to push for so-called ‘limited’ military strikes in order to, according to the official version, prevent violations of the cease fire by the Assad government and disrupt his ability to continue committing war crimes against civilians in Aleppo, and, for sure, to push it back to the negotiating table.
The options under consideration reportedly include bombing Syrian air force runways using cruise missiles and other long range weapons fired from coalition planes and ships.
The report says that the idea is supported by the CIA and the Joint Chiefs Of Staff.
One proposed way to do so without the UN Security Council Resolution would be to carry out the strikes covertly and without public acknowledgement.
This approach also explains the coalition’s actions against the Syrian army outside Deir Ez-Zour in September when over 60 pro-government fighters were killed and over 100 injured lately called an accident by US officials.

But those who live by the sword—Jewmerica—will die by the sword.

Konashenkov pointed to the airstrikes against Syrian government forces in Deir-Ez-Zour as one of the primary motivating factors in importing the potent weapons systems.”]
But the war cries continue. What’s good for the Jews is all that counts.
For with Syria, under Russian air cover, at the brink of victory, and strengthening its “Axis of Resistance” against a “Greater Israel,” the road to World War 3 by Jewmerica marches on.

Well, who needs facts when Russia is replacing America as a major player in the Middle East…not an ‘Israel Firster’ like America, and the neocon Jews are seething.
The heat is on against Russia, and all the signs are there.
First, US planes slaughtered Syrian soldiers trying to liberate Aleppo from Isis; then Samantha Powers blamed Russia for the Isis attack on the UN convoy; then Jeh Johnson of Homeland Security says Russia hacked the DNC with zero evidence; then Killary flames Putin at the debate.
It gets worse.

But make no mistake about it, Russia has humiliated Jewmerica’s plans to topple Assad, and the Jewish neocons are out for blood.

But a more likely scenario— with the Lusitania and Operation Northwood as examples of the US targeting its own citizens—is America executing a ‘false flag’ against Russia:
Paint their F-18s in Russian colors and shoot down their own US plane in Syria; follow with hits on a US fleet in the Arabian Gulf; then blame it on Russia, and the Jews strike fool’s gold.
It gets Hillary elected with her shrieking, “I told you so!” and “See what happens when Trump’s in bed with Putin!”
America retaliates by bombing Russian planes in Syria, then hits the SAA, turns around and strikes Iran which would seek to intervene, and World War 3 kicks in.
Who benefits? International Jewry that prints money out of thin air to fund the war.

You just can’t make this stuff up. Your analysis about a false-flag provocation shoe-horning Hildebeast into the White House is very well thought out, plausible, doable, and perfectly deniable by our own government!
I was thinking “big,” like something on the scale of another 9-11, but that was to get Americans mad enough to get behind Bush, the Jews and the neocons for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
But in fact you’ve shown just how small an incident it would be, and how little clandestine effort it would actually take to conduct a false flag attack on our own military personnel using an F18 or something similar painted in the Russian air force colors, which are the very distinctive blue tones, just like in the video clip you used.
My brother was in the Navy attached to an aircraft carrier’s attack squadron. I know that our military aircraft routinely does paint up US aircraft in “enemy” colors for combat air training, and then repaints them when the drill is over.
And yes, I believe it would be very much like you described. The false flag attack, blaming Russia, and then the “retaliation” for something Russia didn’t do. At first localized to Syria and the Middle East, then escalating tit for tat.
This is the scary part: The War Powers Resolution of 1973 (see Wiki).

Hillary’s more than ready to impose a “no-fly zone” the moment she plunks her butt in the Oval Office. And she is crazy. As US senator, Hildebeast served on the bipartisan Senate Armed Services Committee mentored by neocon Democrat Jew, Carl Levin.
She has a lot of active duty military top brass contacts inside and outside of the Pentagon.
And, Congress wouldn’t lag too much behind giving their war authorization for President Hildebeast to extend the war beyond 60 days. They’d be clamoring for it.
Hillary is an existential threat to every country in the Middle East, and to Russia, and to America as well.
Back in December 2015, Al Jazeera wrote:
During the Dec. 19 Democratic presidential debate in New Hampshire, moderator Martha Raddatz of ABC News generally steered the candidates toward hawkish positions on foreign policy.
She appeared to accept the premise that the war against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also called ISIS) is both necessary and urgent.
But one position advanced by former Secretary of State and current frontrunner Hillary Clinton was so hawkish, so cavalier, that even Raddatz felt compelled to push back.
After Clinton said she supported a no-fly zone in Syria in the context of fighting ISIL, Raddatz skeptically followed up:
RADDATZ: Secretary Clinton, I’d like to go back to that if I could. ISIS doesn’t have aircraft, Al Qaida doesn’t have aircraft. So would you shoot down a Syrian military aircraft or a Russian airplane?

Raddatz moved on, but this exchange illustrates the absurdity of Clinton’s support for a “no-fly zone.”
A no-fly zone over Syria, as all parties understand, is a tacit declaration of war not only against Syria, but also against their longtime ally Russia, whose air force is currently flying over Syria to defend the government of Bashar al-Assad against both ISIL and various rebel groups, some overtly or covertly backed by the United States.
But most Americans don’t know what a no-fly zone is, because the media almost never explains what it would entail. Indeed, one has to look to paragraph 19 of an article in The New York Times from 2013 to get some specifics:
Imposing a no-fly zone, [Gen. Martin E. Dempsey] said, would require as many as 70,000 American servicemen to dismantle Syria’s sophisticated antiaircraft system and then impose a 24-hour watch over the country.
That was written before Russia entered the war in September 2015.
The total number of U.S. servicemen needed to enforce a no-fly zone is likely now much higher, and the stakes for shooting down a Russian jet, intentionally or not, are much greater than for a Syrian one.
Yet none of these inconvenient details are brought up in presidential debates.
That’s why Raddatz was so confused by the idea that Russia would “share” a no-fly zone.
There’s little reason to believe Russia would sell out their only ally in the Middle East, and they’re certainly not going to assist the U.S. in bombing this ally’s air defense and warplanes.
The reason Clinton described a fantasy no-fly zone where Russia joins the U.S. is because a real one could potentially require the U.S. to shoot down Russian jets, and starting World War III doesn’t square with the wishes of most Democrats, let alone most Americans.
[That was ten months ago. Since then, Hildebeast has gotten Democrats pumped up to swing more in the hawkish direction, in part thanks to her pseudo-patriotic spectacle when she accepted the nomination at the DNC].
Even voters who don’t follow foreign policy debates closely can see that it’s not the Syrian Army shooting up cafes and concert calls in Paris; it’s their sworn enemy, ISIL.
Even The Atlantic’s typically hawkish Jeffrey Goldberg was confused, tweeting, “Still trying to understand Hillary’s point re: no-fly zone shared with Russia, which supports Assad’s air force. Not getting it.”
It’s understandable why he doesn’t get it: It makes no sense. Either Clinton is calling for an actual no-fly zone that would involve de facto war against Russia and Syria, or she’s calling for a fantasy one where Russia reverses its entire foreign policy and becomes a client state of the U.S.
She’s either being wildly reckless or willfully obtuse.
No other major Democrat supports Clinton’s tortured position. President Barack Obama himself has dismissed the idea, including when Clinton pushed for it while serving in his administration.
But Clinton isn’t alone. She has lots of company on the other side of aisle, including from GOP establishment favorite Sen. Marco Rubio (with whom she shares a foreign policy consultant, Beacon Strategies), who has repeatedly called for a no-fly zone in similarly vague terms.
In the Republican debates, the moderators haven’t even gone as far as Raddatz tried to in clarifying what this means.
The term “no-fly zone” is casually thrown around in the debates unchallenged, either because the moderators themselves don’t know what exactly it means or because they assume their audience doesn’t.
Either way, “no-fly zone” has become the most effective way of calling for regime change in Syria without appearing to do so. It’s a neocon dog-whistle designed to appeal to hawks without offending a war-weary public.
As George Orwell wrote in “Politics and the English Language,” “such phraseology is needed if one wants to name things without calling up mental pictures of them.”
If Clinton and the GOP want to spark a war with Syria, and by extension Russia, they should be honest about that and what it would entail. Right now all we have is tough-on-Assad bromides and virtually no realistic assessment of how such a plan would be carried out.
This type of bellicose language form Clinton wouldn’t be so troubling if she wasn’t both Obama’s former secretary of state and his likeliest successor.
As Secretary of State John Kerry and Obama attempt to negotiate an end to the Syrian conflict, having just adopted a very tenuous framework at the U.N. Security Council, the specter of a de facto declaration of war against Russia in January 2017 is hardly helpful.
Perhaps the Russians assume it’s just election-year bluster, but perhaps they don’t. Or perhaps the Iranians don’t. Or perhaps, above all, Assad does not.

Daily Kos: In 2001 (before 9/11), Belgian historian Anne Morelli (fr) published a book analyzing the basic principles of war propaganda.
Unfortunately and as far as I can tell, it was never translated to English (only in German).
She credits the work of Lord Ponsonby, an amazing and unfortunately somewhat forgotten character.
He stood, largely alone, in the Commons opposing WWI before it started, predicting not just the massacre it was going to be, but more interestingly for our purpose, how it was going to be sold to the masses.
Morelli enumerates it as the following principles:
1. We don’t want war, we are only defending ourselves
2. The other guy is the sole responsible for this war
3. Our adversary’s leader is evil and looks evil
4. We are defending a noble purpose, not special interest
5. The enemy is purposefully causing atrocities; we only commit mistakes
6. The enemy is using unlawful weapons
7. We have very little losses, the enemy is losing big
8. Intellectuals and artists support our cause
9. Our cause is sacred
10. Those who doubt our propaganda are traitors.
There is no value judgment in those principles; we can verify that they apply regardless of the evilness of the belligerent we evaluate through them. They may also be true.
They applied to revanchiste France in 1914 as well as Britain, they applied to Nazi Germany and to the United States in WW2.
They applied to colonial powers and to Gulf War I allied.
They undeniably apply to current Afghanistan and Iraq.”

You are absolutely right.
A war triggered by a false flag incident would be in their interests for several reasons:
1) It would derail a “loose canon” Trump victory since either the election would be cancelled or Hilary would triumph on the “I TOLD YOU” basis + she is the only candidate willing to stand up to “evil” Putin (unlike Trump who is soft on him)
2) It would also give them an opportunity to camouflage the inevitable collapse of the SWINDLER monetary system and reorganize it in their favor. This system is the basis of their power and the reason for all our economic problems (which is why it remains such an enigma).
3) It would give them an excuse to damage their primary enemy–Christian Orthodox Russia— and attempt to impose their uni-polar/Bolshevist-internationalist world order on the rest of humanity using the lives and blood of Goy soldiers.

Here is Lord Ponsonby’s original work online. I spent some time reading it today. It’s a fascinating read, and I greatly admire his unwavering commitment to truth.

Russia Deploys S-300 to Syria to ‘Prevent Hotheads From Making Rash Decisions’
Russia has deployed the S-300V4 “Antey-2500” and the S-400 Triumf to the Syrian port city of Tartus and the Hmeymim airbase respectively to show the bare minimum that Moscow requires to “prevent military hotheads from the other side from making rash decisions,” retired colonel Mikhail Khodarenok wrote for Gazeta.ru.
The military expert pointed out that both advanced air defense systems have been installed in Syria in the most basic configuration possible.
In other words, the capabilities of the S-300V4 and the S-400 deployed to Syria are largely limited, meaning that the systems have been ostensibly stationed in the war-torn Arab country to send a message.
“A single S-400 air defense missile battalion and a single S-300V4 squadron are incapable of tackling all challenges with regard to efficient fight against modern air assault weapons,” he said.
The Russian Ministry of Defense, Khodarenok said, expects that a limited deployment will “sober the West up” and Moscow will not have to send additional defense complexes to Syria.
The Russian military “has all the capabilities to drastically increase the operational strength of its air defense forces in Syria,” the analyst noted.
“Moscow is currently merely demonstrating its capability to push back a potential adversary. Earlier, the lack of this prospect to a certain extent spoiled our potential partners.”
The S-400 Triumf (NATO codename SA-21 Growler) anti-aircraft and anti-missile system was deployed to Syria last November after the Turkish Air Force downed a Russian Su-24 in northern Syria.
In service since 2007, the complex is capable of intercepting all types of modern air weaponry, including fifth-generation warplanes, as well as ballistic and cruise missiles at a maximum range of nearly 250 miles.
Last week, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the S-300V4 (NATO designation SA-23 Gladiator) was deployed to Tartus.
The system is meant to track and intercept short- and medium-range ballistic missile, aeroballistic and cruise missiles, as well as fixed-wing aircraft, ECM (electronic countermeasure) platforms and precision-guided munitions.

U.S. Launches First Air Strikes In Yemen War After Attacks On Warship
The United States said its strikes were aimed at radar that enabled the launch of three missiles this week against the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Mason.
U.S. officials said the military launched cruise missile strikes to knock out radar sites in Yemen controlled by Iran-allied Huthi forces, retaliating after failed missile attacks this week on a U.S. Navy destroyer.
The strikes on October 13, authorized by President Barack Obama, were Washington’s first direct military action against Huthi targets in the Yemen civil war.
The Pentagon stressed that the strikes were defensive and aimed at radar that enabled the launch of three missiles this week against the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Mason.
“These limited self-defense strikes were conducted to protect our personnel, our ships, and our freedom of navigation,” Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said.
“The United States will respond to any further threat to our ships and commercial traffic, as appropriate.”
Huthi rebels deny they have targeted any warships.
A Saudi-led coalition is carrying out an air campaign against the Huthi rebels.
U.S. support for the coalition has come under strain following an air strike on a funeral in Sanaa last weekend killed 140 people.

Jeddah- The United States’ Pentagon on Tuesday warned that whoever fired missiles at a U.S. Navy destroyer and an accompanying ship off the coast of Yemen over the weekend had done so “at their own peril,” language that suggested preparations for possible retaliation.
The Obama administration should “retaliate swiftly and decisively” against the attack, Senator Lindsey Graham said Monday, Kristina Wong reports at the Hill.
“Anybody who takes action, fires against U.S. Navy ships operating in international waters, does so at their own peril,” Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis told a news briefing, noting the missiles came from territory controlled by Iran-aligned Houthi militants.
The vessel was on a routine patrol in international waters, according to officials.
Asked whether the Pentagon was developing targets for retaliatory strikes, Davis said: “I’m not confirming that right now.”
Iran-backed Houthi militias are thought to be to blame after a missile was fired on a US Navy warship in the Red Sea. The USS Mason, a guided missile destroyer, was shot at with rockets but was undamaged.
“USS Mason detected two inbound missiles over a 60-minute period while in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen. Both missiles impacted the water before reaching the ship,” Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said.
“There were no injuries to our sailors and no damage to the ship.”
The Pentagon did not specify how close the missiles came to the U.S.S Mason. However, a U.S. defense official told Reuters the first missile forced the U.S.S Mason to take defensive measures.
Yemen’s Major Gen. Samir Haj told Asharq Al-Awsat that if the international community continues to stand idle against Houthi militants’ usage and ownership of illegal arms, Bab el Mandeb strait is what is at risk.
“We stand against a permanent danger if the international community continues to dismiss wayward gangs and militias possessing weapons,” said Haj.

There’s no evidence that the Yemeni rebels fired at the USS Mason, the alleged missiles (or rockets) sank into the ocean. The Houthis emphatically deny firing at the ship.
The US claims, without a shred of proof, that not only did the Houthis fire missiles at the USS Mason, and that ballistic counter-measures were taken to destroy the alleged missiles, but specifically that the missiles were “Iranian-made”.
The BBC states: “The incident came eight days after an attack on an “Emirati civilian ship that was also blamed on the Houthis.
The UAE government said the high-speed catamaran was carrying aid, wounded Yemenis and passengers when it was hit in the Bab al-Mandab strait.”
The problem with this, is that the vessel is identified by South Front as being leased by the US Navy to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Navy, then how is it a “civilian ship?”
As a UAE navy ship, I suppose it could have a special commission flying under a recognized humanitarian aid banner and still do what was claimed, “carrying aid, wounded Yemenis and passengers”.
But then, it would be odd that all of that would be on board together, because I would expect the humanitarian aid to be going TO Yemen, and that wounded Yemenis be transported FROM Yemen.
Nor has any humanitarian/medical aid organization protested about an alleged assault by the Houthis that I know of.
I’m certain that the UN, International Red Cross/Crescent and other humanitarian organizations would be clamoring, because Yemen is now a humanitarian disaster, and any sort of attack on a ship, military or civilian, providing precious relief would be a protest heard around the world. And nothing is said about where this vessel sailed from in Yemen or its destination.
The San Diego Union Tribune, reporting that the Houthis fired on the USS Mason yesterday for the second time in four days, describes the catamaran vessel as “a logistics ship under the operation of United Arab Emirates in the same waters on Oct. 1,” meaning a military logistics ship, probably operating in Yemen territorial waters defined as 12 miles off the coastline.

Iran Sends Ships to Yemeni Coast in Wake of U.S. Strikes
Iran says it has dispatched two warships to the Gulf of Aden to ply the same waters as several U.S. Navy vessels are already operating there, one of which launched several Tomahawk missiles at Tehran-backed Houthi radar installations early Thursday morning.
According to the Iranian Tasnim news site, which has links to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, the frigate Alvand and logistics ship Bushehr are heading to the Yemeni coast “to protect the country’s trade vessels against piracy.”
But the site also notes that “the presence of the Iranian fleet in the Gulf of Aden coincides with the US decision to directly get involved in a Saudi-led war against Yemen.”
Piracy has all but disappeared in the area, and the Iranian ships are scheduled to then sail south down Africa’s east coast.
The Iranian warship heading to the Gulf of Aden — the 45 year-old Alvand, which carries anti-ship missiles, a Mark 8 gun as well as various machine guns — already has a checkered history with the U.S. Navy.
In July 2015, the ship trained its guns on a U.S. Navy helicopter and an allied supply ship operating with the USS Farragut in the waterway, but the incident was contained before any violence broke out.
The news of the deployment comes hours after the USS Nitze launched several Tomahawk missiles at three radar sites in a Houthi rebel-controlled part of Yemen, sites the U.S. believes took part in the three separate missile attacks on U.S. Navy ships operating off the Yemeni coast this week.
Yemen’s Saba news agency, which acts as a mouthpiece for the Houthi-led government, charged Thursday that “U.S. allegations” of its ships being targeted were made to create “false justifications to pave the way for Saudi-led coalition to escalate their aggression” against Yemen “and to cover for crimes continually committed” by the coalition fighting to oust the Houthis from power.
Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Sharaf Luqman Haq also lashed out at Washington on Thursday, telling The Wall Street Journal that the “direct American attack and targeting of Yemeni territory this morning is unacceptable and any developments will be dealt with accordingly.”
The Pentagon is trying to assure regional actors that it’s not interested in taking on a bigger role in the Saudi-led war in Yemen.
“We don’t seek a wider role in this conflict,” Peter Cook, the Pentagon press secretary told reporters Thursday.
The strikes were “not connected to the broader conflict in Yemen,” he added, but “should we see a repeat, we will be prepared to take appropriate action again,” he said.
U.S. officials contend that the strike on the three Houthi radar sites was an act of self-defense.
White House spokesman Eric Schultz told reporters Thursday that “the intent of our strikes were to deter future attacks and to reduce the risk to U.S. and other vessels. We are prepared to respond if necessary to any future missile launches.”
It is unclear what prompted the missile launches toward the USS Mason and other ships, but they come days after the Houthis claimed credit for a missile strike on the HSV Swift, a U.A.E-operated navy vessel in the Red Sea that almost completely destroyed the ship.
In a significant move, the Mason deployed two Standard Missile-2s and a single Enhanced Sea Sparrow Missile to intercept the incoming missiles, marking the first time either self-defense system has been used to protect an American warship from incoming missiles.
The attack on the American ships also comes amid the backdrop of a Saudi airstrike on a funeral in Sanaa that killed 140 people, including several high-ranking Houthi officials, among them some well-known moderates who were attempting to set up negotiations between the Saudis and Houthis.
The strike has led Washington to again assess its support for the air campaign, which includes refueling of Saudi and Emirati bombers, and some intelligence support.
State Department spokesman John Kirby said Tuesday the U.S. has “been nothing but candid and forthright with the Saudis about our concerns over civilian casualties and collateral damage and our concerns about lack of precision in the conduct of some of these strikes.”

Brigadier General Sharaf Luqman, a spokesman for Yemeni forces, stressed on Thursday that Sana’a reserves the right to defend itself from threats whether they be Saudi or American.

Slowly, steadily the resolved, dirt-poor Yemenis are making their wide-scale advance inside Saudi Arabia and capturing more territory from the Arab Coalition. Pounding Saudi Arabia’s southern military bases, yhe Houthi-Saleh loyalists are reclaiming historical Yemen territory to begin with. These territories were acquired by the Saudis about 1934, such as Najran, as part of a reportedly crooked peace deal.
All Saudi ground attacks in Yemen have ended in failure. Their proxy troops, hired from South America and Africa, get beaten as soon as they enter the central Yemeni highlands.

The U.S. provides targeting intelligence and air refueling, and delivers huge amount of bombs and weapons. The Yemenis continue to respond to Saudi attacks on Yemen with attacks in Saudi Arabia. I doubt the Saudi dynasty and its’ mega-wealthy allies ever thought for one minute their invasion of Yemen would meet with such resistance.
This in turn is emboldening Saudi Arab dissidents, particularly the heavily suppressed and marginalized indigenous Arab Shi’ites in Eastern Province, the oil center of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia who are the country’s oil workers and live in abject poverty.
An estimated 10-15% of approximately 20 million natives of Saudi Arabia are Shia Muslims, restless after the Saudi executions of a number of their dissident clerics at the beginning of the year.
The US finally had to step in.
The only thing the Saudi Arabs know how to do, despite billions of dollars of military weapons, equipment, and aircraft purchased from the US is hire the professional mercenaries and US specialists to operate and maintain their expensive military stuff, and beat their wives.
In the meantime, the UK Independent reported, “Saudi Arabia to ease Yemen blockade after funeral strike as rights group condemns air strikes as ‘war crimes’”.
The LA Times headlines reads: “Attack may push U.S. to reconsider support of Saudi Arabia-led air war in Yemen”.
Implicated in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia coalition war crimes, the Guardian headlines reported 5 days ago, “US says support for Saudi Arabia not a ‘blank cheque’ after Yemen air raid”.

ALEPPO, SYRIA (4:15 P.M.) – Yesterday, a government delegation met with a group of rebel commanders to discuss the possible surrender of several neighborhoods in east Aleppo.
Al-Masdar News was told that if the negotiations went well, the rebels would surrender parts of east Aleppo in exchange for free passage to another via the Bustan Al-Qaser District.
According to a military source in Aleppo, the government and rebels are still negotiating the possible surrender; however, no further details could be provided at this time.
Unlike the previous Darayya and Old Homs agreements, a large population remains in the east Aleppo pocket.
If the rebels were to surrender some parts of east Aleppo, the remaining civilians will most likely be given the option of living under the government or being transferred to another rebel-held area.

It is easy to exaggerate the opening that is occurring between Israel and several Gulf states, but it’s easy to underestimate it too. The most recent change: Saudi Arabia has stopped blocking access to Israeli newspapers on line.
As Al Akhbar in Beirut reported in a story entitled “Saudi Arabia Lifts Ban on Israeli Press.” Here’s a part of the story:
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is gradually endorsing its relations with Israel and widening these relations’ scope by moving from the political communication calls and mutual visits into media normalization.
“This indicates that things will further escalate in a way as to prepare for subsequent steps.
“Yesterday, the Hebrew media revealed that the ban and surveillance that were imposed on the Saudis preventing them to enter Israeli news websites have been lifted knowing that this ban had gone one for years.
This Saudi step was seen in Tel Aviv as an indication to enhancing the [bilateral] relations and normalization….
“The Israeli Jerusalem Post newspaper, which is published in English, had confirmed that Saudi Arabia lifted the surveillance and ban imposed on the Israeli press and that the Saudis can now enter and browse its website and other Israeli websites including the websites of the Hebrew media.
The newspaper indicated that the number of people browsing its website from Saudi Arabia is on the rise.
It further quoted journalists via social communication networks as saying that entering the website as well as other Israeli news websites is now possible….Israeli users of the social communication networks expressed their joy over what they called the normalization with the Kingdom and the enhancement of the relations between the two parties.”

This not so small a step. Sure, Saudis could get around the ban in the past–but now access to the Israeli press is normal and no big deal, just like reading The Times of London or The Washington Post.
Sure, very few Saudis read Hebrew, but there are many Israeli news sites in English, from The Times of Israel to The Jerusalem Post to Ynews.
Reading such sites will give Saudis a view of Middle Eastern, and Israeli-Palestinian, affairs that’s quite different from their Foreign Ministry’s official line.
It will give them far deeper insights into Palestinian and Israeli politics, U.S.-Israel relations, and Israeli society.
What’s more, it will show them that a free press does exist in at least one place quite nearby in the Middle East, able to criticize government policy without fear.
So it is an entirely positive development, and one must give credit to the Saudi government. The Saudis keep saying there is change and reform underway in the Kingdom. This is a sign that they mean it.

The developing Iranian influence in the Middle East has previously been the justification for mutual cooperation between Saudi and Israel.
However, with the fear of a “bogeymen” named Daesh, both sides are seizing the opportunity to shift public opinion with some justifications and compromises to enable them to take their relationship to the next level. This shift will be evident in the Palestinian issue.

Since the advent of Israel on the world map in 1948, the Arab states, other Muslim states and Muslim communities have never accepted its existence and consider it an illicit state which has occupied the land of Palestine.
However, a paradigm shift commenced with the Saudi-brokered Arab Peace Initiative, which was endorsed by the Arab League’s 22 member states in 2002.
Arab leaders collectively offered Israel “recognition” of its right to exist and “normalisation” of diplomatic ties in exchange for its complete withdrawal from Arab lands captured since 1967.
Speaking about the initiative, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this month: “We are willing to negotiate with the Arab states revisions to that initiative so that it reflects the dramatic changes in the region since 2002, but maintains the agreed goal of two states for two peoples.”
Over the past year, Israel has increased its illegal settlements in occupied East Jerusalem and elsewhere, its atrocities and killings have also risen, in addition to the restrictions it placed on worshippers accessing Al-Aqsa Mosque.
All of which have not brought about an outcry from the international community or Arab rulers.
However, these actions provide a further cover-up for the negotiations which are taking place behind the scenes; the more the Palestinians suffer, the higher the chances that the masses will accept any peace deal which could relieve their suffering.
One would expect Hamas to fire hundreds of rockets into Israel in response, this has not transpired and instead, a secret Gaza truce deal is about to be concluded between Hamas and Israel – mediated by former EU Envoy for Peace in the Middle East Tony Blair, Egypt, Turkey and Qatar.
It seems that all the Middle Eastern states are working to normalise relations with Israel behind closed doors, under the guise of saving Palestinians and Gaza.
Contracts like Red Sea deal are more likely to be seen as part of this plan.

Rightly or wrongly I am coming to the independent conclusion that Judaism is not a religion at all, but rather is an organized crime culture that hides behind a religious mantra to justify the creation of an organized crime clubhouse called Israel.

Jordanians Protest Against Israel Gas Deal For Third Week In A Row
This is the third week of protests in Amman against the controversial Jordan-Israel natural gas deal.
More than a thousand people protested in the Jordanian capital Amman on Friday against a recent government agreement to import natural gas from Israel, local media reported.
This is the third consecutive week protests have taken place against the controversial deal, which was signed on 26 September.
This Friday’s demonstration departed from the Grand Husseini Mosque in central Amman after Friday prayers.
Chants included “Oh great Jordanian people, the enemy’s (Israel) gas is imperialism,” and “from the south to the north, the gas of the enemy is occupation.”

US firm Noble Energy, the lead partner, said the contract with the National Electric Power Company of Jordan (NEPCO) was for 8.5 million cubic metres per day over a 15-year term.
MPs from a variety of different political backgrounds have spoken out against the deal, saying that “normalisation is unacceptable in all its forms”.
The protests are being called by the “National Campaign to Overturn the Gas Deal with the Zionist Entity”, a broad coalition of civil society groups, activists, lawyers and political groups.
The campaign estimates that 56 percent of the deal ($5.6bn) and an estimated 40 percent of electricity bills paid by Jordanian households will go directly into Israeli government coffers.

Former Kuwaiti minister urges action against Egypt over UNSC vote
Former Kuwaiti Information Minister Saad Al-Ajmi criticised Egypt’s vote in favour of a Russian draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council on Saturday calling on Gulf countries to take action against Cairo at an international level.
In a tweet, Al-Ajmi criticised Egyptian President Abdul Fatah Al-Sisi’s lack of “truthfulness” over vows to support the Gulf.
“We saw his real weight in the G20 summit in China and we felt his loyalty in the Security Council vote,” Al-Ajmi wrote on 10 October, urging Gulf states to take action against him.
The former Kuwaiti minister praised the Saudi decision to halt the supply of refined oil products to Egypt as a “first step” and urged other Gulf nations to follow suit, “not out of hatred toward the Egyptian people but for Sisi to know his place and to stop blackmailing us.”
In a separate tweet on 8 October, following Egypt’s Security Council vote, Al-Ajmi said: “If we calculate Gulf aid to Senegal in the past 50 years, it hardly makes up one per cent of what we gave Sisi in one month. Today, Senegal voted in our favour and Egypt voted against us at the Security Council.”
A media war has erupted between Egypt and Saudi Arabia after news emerged about the Saudi decision to halt oil supplies to Egypt.
An Egyptian official had confirmed that Saudi Aramco, a governmental Saudi company and the biggest energy company in the world, informed the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, Egypt’s state-owned oil company, that it has suspended oil supplies to the county this month.

I don’t think religion played much of a role in that family, and the denomination Trump embraces has gone into apostasy (imo) but that is not to say that God has turned his back on all of them. I should have known from the banner that it was an Orthodox priest as I read the entire article thinking it was a more sound teaching Catholic priest (Catholic priests run the whole gamut imo). Then I saw at the end of the article my assumption was wrong, but I doubt he’s Russian Orthodox.
I understand the Eastern Orthodox churches including the Russian are is it autocephalus? That would mean not having a head like a pope whom they must all obey but they are all loosely united or maybe not. More and more I turn to Orthodox sources for spiritual nourishment.

She’s a genuine stateswoman and diplomat, (as well as a lady in the old-fashioned sense of the word); head and shoulders above any of the bloody harpies at the US State Department, including the demonically laughing womanoid shrike, Hildebeast, the Queen of Pazuzu. Ms. Zakharova has a backbone. You can tell that because she doesn’t have to bellow to make herself look powerful.
Ms. Zakharova is Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. She’s no stranger to Russian political talk shows, and often makes colorful comments on sensitive political issues in social networks.
I wish she’d come over and take over our own dysfunctional and increasingly moronic Department of State. I may not like or agree with something that comes out of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but at least I believe I get some straight answers.

Developments in Syria
We are watching with concern the military and political developments in Syria. Tensions are especially high in Aleppo.
The illegal armed groups that are closely connected to the Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists are desperately trying to unblock the extremists who have been surrounded in eastern Aleppo by the Syrian Army, maintain their positions and deliver reinforcements, weapons and munitions from the back areas to the conflict line.
The terrorists are shooting at the local neighbourhoods with small arms, home-made and captured multiple launch rocket systems and mortars. Civilians die every day in these indiscriminate attacks.
The Syrian Army is advancing in several directions, liberating eastern Aleppo from the terrorists, one building after another. Humanitarian corridors have been established to help civilians leave the city. Tragically, the terrorists mined the approaches to these corridors.
As we said before, they are using civilians as a live shield because everyone, including the terrorists, know that the political and information screen, which their Western sponsors are trying to throw by fuelling hysteria over the developments in eastern Aleppo, meets their [terrorists’] interests not because the situation is clear and close to a settlement, but exactly because it is complicated.
Western media and political analysts provide a distorted picture of the situation. This distortion is definitely playing into the terrorists’ hands. In line with this logic, the terrorists are hindering the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians. They want to see people suffer because it provides a backdrop that attracts public attention around the world.
Local residents held demonstrations in some districts of Aleppo such as Saliheed, Marjeh, al-Fardos and Bab an-Nayrab to demand that the al-Nusra terrorists who control these districts immediately allow the delivery of food.
The Syrian Government has issued an official statement that the army will guarantee the safe exit from eastern Aleppo for everyone, including fighters who are willing to surrender their weapons and depart to any other region of the country of their choice. We see that Damascus has indicated an openness to any initiative that can ease tensions and normalise the situation in the city.
The Russian military have established stations where hot meals and basic necessities are issued to local residents. Humanitarian aid is distributed in the Aleppo and Deraa provinces, including baked goods, sugar, flour, rice, tea, and canned meat and fish. Unfortunately,
CNN has not shown any footage of this. They do not seem to be interested.
Individual conflicts between terrorists have been reported, marking yet another aspect of the Syrian conflict. The jihadists are fighting over foreign financial assistance, spheres of influence and power.
Ahrar ash-Sham and Jund al-Aqsa are fighting each other in the Idlib province, reportedly because Ahrar ash-Sham has accused Jund al-Aqsa of assisting ISIS and even of helping the transit of ISIS terrorists. Jund al-Aqsa has accused its terrorist “brothers” of subversive activities that have allegedly allowed the Syrian Army to regain control over several towns in the north of the Hama province.
On October 10, the terrorist organisations Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (former Jabhat al-Nusra) and Ahrar ash-Sham signed an agreement, which concerns the incorporation of Jund al-Aqsa into Jabhat Fateh al-Sham. It is supposed that all disputes between Ahrar ash-Sham and Jund al-Aqsa should be settled peacefully, within a special dispute settlement commission.
This agreement is yet more evidence of close ties between ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra, Jund al-Aqsa and Ahrar ash-Sham. This document is available on the internet to anyone. It is in Arabic, but some media outlets have translated it.
On the morning of October 8, a Russian Mi-8 helicopter, which was delivering humanitarian aid in the Hama province, was attacked by ISIS from a shoulder-fired rocket system. The helicopter took measures to evade the strike. None of the Russian military on board the helicopter were injured.
We have taken note of the statements made by some Syrian opposition members, who demanded that their regional sponsors supply air defence systems to the armed extremist groups. We hope that our regional and other partners will have the good sense to disregard these appeals.
Russia will not allow anyone to endanger the lives of its citizens, including military personnel. Any unfriendly actions taken against Russia will not remain unanswered.
At the same time, Russia will continue its consistent and uncompromising struggle against terrorists and all kinds of terrorism.
We reaffirm our willingness to engage in a dialogue with our foreign partners, based on equality and mutual respect, to help reach a settlement in Syria.

New unfriendly steps taken by the US
I’d like to comment on what is happening in Russian-American relations. It pains me to do so as there is no good news. We regret to see Washington continue to aggravate Russian-American relations. We hear threats, nearly on a daily basis, to expand the sanctions and also appeals to the international community to follow suit.
Washington has made no secret of the fact that the sanctions policy is primarily to undermine the Russian economy. The Pentagon has been building up its military presence along Russian borders.
Inside the US, as you know and hear every day, Russophobic propaganda from some of the very top officials is totally off the charts. It is more undisguised lies than propaganda (propaganda is a very general term). What we hear daily are complete lies, for example, about Russian hackers who nobody has seen but who everybody already knows in absentia.
The average person in America is made to believe that Russia is an adversary.
We are now at a point where American representatives in the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other international financial institutions have been instructed to block funding for any programmes connected with Russia. They have been tacitly doing this for a while, but now they are receiving straightforward instructions.
The White House is trying to use any leverage to pressure Russia and is doing it with painful pleasure, not as if it was forced to do so but in a ceremonial way (which is particularly surprising). We have a clear notion that all of these measures are dictated by the American domestic developments ahead of the elections.
We have the increasing feeling that the outgoing US administration has been pursuing a “scorched earth policy” in bilateral relations. This is a dangerous policy that could have detrimental consequences for international stability and is unlikely to bring any positive change.
In any case, nobody should be under the illusion that Russia can be pressured – be it the current American leadership or the incoming administration.
Hopefully, the new administration will prove to be smarter than its predecessor.

You are right when you say the general in the video is so arrogant. Too bad Ho Chi Min and General Giap are not around to tell him how effective obsolete Russian military equipment can be in motivated hands.
According to Gordon Duff more than half of the American officers, whom Duff calls “perfumed princes” killed in Viet Nam, when he was there, were shot by their own troops. Its not difficult to see why.

I rotate thru Diego Garcia every 6 weeks to pull maintenance on uplink equipment as a private contractor. I have watched GLP off and on for 4 years.
Something big is going on, the island has more aircraft than anytime in the last 9 years.
They have blocked off some access roads and are now parking aircraft on the road. Barriers have been set up around the aircraft areas.
Temporary barracks and hangers are popping up everywhere. A tent city full of AF and Navy maintenance personal has also been set up.
I have never seen B1s and B2s there at the same time. Actually I have never seen more than 1 there at a time.

My coworker is former AF and said they are like that when nukes are around.
We counted over a dozen air refueling tankers on the ground.
The airfield had a take off or landing every 15 minutes, very busy. When we flew out we waited in line for quite a while. We never had to wait in the past.
The Navy had the docks full of ships and 6 to 8 more were moored just off shore. We watched many pallets of bombs being off loaded from one ship.

Exclusive: The propaganda war on Russia is spinning out of control with a biased investigation blaming Moscow for the MH-17 tragedy and angry exchanges over Syria, raising the risks of nuclear war, says ex-CIA analyst Ray McGovern.

As U.S. and Russian officials trade barbed threats and as diplomacy on Syria is “on the verge” of extinction, it is tempting to view the ongoing propaganda exchange over who shot down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in July 2014 as a side-show.
That would be a huge mistake – easily made by President Obama’s wet-behind-the-ears sophomoric advisers who seem to know very little of the history of U.S.-Russia relations and appear smug in their ignorance.
Adult input is sorely needed. There are advantages to having some hands-on experience, and having watched how propaganda wars can easily escalate to military confrontation.
In a Sept. 28 interview with Sputnik Radio, I addressed some serious implications of the decision by the U.S. and two of its European vassal states (the Netherlands and Ukraine) to stoke tensions with Russia still higher by blaming it for the downing of MH-17.
In short, there is considerable risk that the Russians may see this particular propaganda offensive (which “justified” the European Union’s economic sanctions in 2014), together with NATO’s saber rattling in central Europe, as steps toward war.
In fact, there is troubling precedent for precisely that.
A very similar set of circumstances existed 33 years ago after the Soviets did shoot down Korean Airlines Flight 007 on Sept. 1, 1983, when it strayed over sensitive military targets inside the Soviet Union and the KAL-007 pilots failed to respond to repeated warnings.
After the tragic reality became obvious, the Soviets acknowledged that they had downed the plane but said they did not know it was a passenger plane.
However, 1983 was another time of high tensions between the two superpowers and President Ronald Reagan wanted to paint the Soviets in the darkest of hues.
So, his administration set out to sell the storyline that the Soviets had willfully murdered the 269 passengers and crew.
U.S. government propagandists and their media stenographers laid on all the Sturm und Drang they could summon to promote the lie that the Soviets knew KAL-007 was a civilian passenger plane before they shot it down.
As Newsweek’s headline declared, “Murder in the Sky.”
Exploitation of the tragedy yielded a steep rise in tensions, and almost led to a nuclear exchange just two months later. There is an important lesson, now three decades later, as Western governments and the mainstream media manufacture more endless fear and hatred of Russia.
The Dutch/Ukrainian Follies
On Wednesday, new “evidence” blaming Russia for the downing of MH-17 over eastern Ukraine was made public – brought out of the oven, as it were, at a Dutch Maid bakery employing Ukrainian confectioners. A bite into the evidence and it immediately dissolves like refined sugar – and leaves an unpleasant artificial taste in the mouth.
The Dutch-Ukrainian charade played by the “Joint Investigation Team,” on which Belgium, Australia and Malaysia also have members, is an insult to the relatives and friends of the 298 human beings killed in the shoot-down. Understandably, those relatives and friends long for truth and accountability, and they deserve it.
Yet, as happened in 1983 with the credulous acceptance of the Reagan administration’s version of the KAL-007 case, the mainstream Western media has embraced the JIT’s findings as “conclusive” and the evidence as “overwhelming.”
But it is in reality extraordinarily thin, essentially a case of deciding immediately after the event that the Russians were to be blamed and spending more than two years assembling snippets of intercepted conversations (from 150,000 provided by the Ukrainian intelligence service) that could be stitched together to create an impression of guilt.
In the slick video, which serves as the JIT’s investigative “report,” the intercepted voices don’t say anything about Russian Buk missiles actually being deployed inside Ukraine or shooting down a plane or the need to get the Buk missiles out of Ukraine afterwards. One voice early on says he’d like to have some Buks but – after that – Buks aren’t mentioned and everything in the video is supposition. [See Consortiumnews.com’s “Troubling Gaps in MH-17 Report.”]
There’s also no explanation as to why the Russians would have taken a bizarrely circuitous route when a much more direct and discreet course was available.
The JIT’s embrace of that strange itinerary was made necessary by the fact that the only “social media” images of a Buk system traveling on July 17, 2014, before the MH-17 shoot-down, show the Buks heading east toward Russia, not west from Russia. [See Consortiumnews.com’s “The Official and Implausible MH-17 Scenario.”]
In other words, to make the storyline fit with the available images, the JIT had to take the alleged Russian-Buk convoy on a ridiculous trip far out of the way so it could be photographed in Donetsk before doubling back toward the alleged firing site near Snizhne, which could have been reached easily from the Russian border without the extensive detour through heavily populated areas.
Ignoring Inconvenient Evidence
The JIT also had to ignore its own evidence that on the night of July 16-17, 2014, Ukrainian military convoys were pressing deep inside what has been called “rebel-controlled territory.” The obvious implication is that if a Ukrainian convoy could move to within a few miles of Luhansk, as one of the intercepts described, a Ukrainian Buk convoy could have traveled to the east as well.
And, the JIT’s presumed motive for the Russians taking the extraordinary decision of supplying a Buk battery to the rebels – that it was needed to shoot down Ukrainian warplanes attacking rebels on the front lines – doesn’t fit with the placement of a Buk system on farmland south of Snizhne, far from the frontlines. Indeed, very little about the JIT’s case makes sense.
It also appears that the JIT devoted no effort to examining other plausible scenarios regarding who might have shot down MH-17. The JIT video report makes no reference to the several Ukrainian Buk systems that were operating in eastern Ukraine on the day that MH-17 was shot down.
The Dutch intelligence service MIVD, relying on NATO’s intelligence capabilities, reported earlier that the only anti-aircraft-missile systems in the area on July 17, 2014, capable of shooting down MH-17 were under the control of the Ukrainian military.
But the JIT’s report offered no explanation of where those Ukrainian Buk systems were located or whether Ukraine had accounted for all the Buk missiles in those batteries. The JIT’s blinders can be explained by the fact that it was coordinating with (and relying on) Ukraine’s SBU intelligence agency, which has among its responsibilities the protection of Ukrainian government secrets.
The shocking reality about the JIT is that one of the major suspects for having shot down MH-17, Ukraine, was pretty much running the inquiry.
Yet, since the JIT’s accusations on Wednesday, the West’s mainstream media has put on its own blinders so as not to notice the gaps and inconsistencies in the case. But what should be apparent to anyone without blinders is that the JIT set its sights on blaming the Russians for the MH-17 shoot-down in 2014 and nothing was going to get in the way of that conclusion.
That predetermined conclusion began with Secretary of State John Kerry’s rush to judgment, just three days after the shoot-down, putting the blame on the Russians. It then took the JIT more than two years to scrape together enough “evidence” to “confirm” Kerry’s findings.
The Near-Nuclear Clash
As a longtime CIA analyst covering the Soviet Union, the MH-17 case immediately brought to my mind the exploitation of the KAL-007 tragedy for propaganda purposes in 1983.
After KAL-007 went down, the U.S. propaganda machinery, led by the U.S. Information Agency, went into high gear, even doctoring evidence for a U.N. Security Council meeting to “prove” the Soviets knew KAL-007 was a civilian aircraft and still shot it down deliberately.
The same sort of anti-Russian hysteria is in play today as it was in 1983.
And we now know based on declassified records that the extreme vilification of Moscow back then led Soviet leaders to believe that President Reagan was preparing for a nuclear war, a conflict that almost got started because of the harsh propaganda, combined with unprecedented military exercises and other provocations.
Last year, a former CIA colleague and senior manager of Soviet analysis, Mel Goodman, wrote about the “war scare” in the Kremlin in the fall of 1983, and asked if history may be repeating itself.
Goodman personally helped persuade Reagan to ratchet down the tension, but it’s less clear if any adult remains who could tell President Obama to do the same now.
Goodman wrote: “1983 was the most dangerous year in the Soviet-American Cold War confrontation since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. President Reagan declared a political and military campaign against the ‘evil empire’ … Soviet leaders believed that the ‘correlation of world forces,’ Soviet terminology for the international balance, was unfavorable to Moscow and that the U.S. government was in the hands of a dangerous anti-Soviet crowd.
“In response to Reagan’s references to the Soviet Union as the ‘focus of evil in the world’ … the new Soviet general secretary, Yuri Andropov, a former KGB chief, suggested that Reagan was insane and a liar … Andropov would take no chances.
Soviet leaders believed the Reagan administration was using a mobilization exercise called ‘Able Archer’ in November 1983 to prepare a nuclear surprise attack. The KGB instituted a sensitive collection effort to determine if the United States was planning such an attack. …
“In addition to the Able Archer mobilization exercise that alarmed the Kremlin, the Reagan administration authorized unusually aggressive military exercises near the Soviet border that, in some cases, violated Soviet territorial sovereignty.
“The Pentagon’s risky measures included … naval exercises in wartime approaches to the USSR where U.S. warships had previously not entered. Additional secret operations simulated surprise naval attacks on Soviet targets.”
Reining in Reagan
Goodman continued: “One of the great similarities between Russia and the United States was that both sides feared surprise attack. The United States suffered psychologically from the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor; it has still not recovered from 9/11.
“Yet, the United States has never appreciated that Moscow has similar fears due to Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion in the same year as Pearl Harbor, a far greater nightmare.
“Russia’s fear of surprise attack was accentuated in 1983, when the United States deployed the Army’s Pershing-II missile and land-based cruise missiles in West Europe as a counter to the Soviet Union’s SS-20 missiles.
The SS-20 was not a ‘strategic’ weapon because of a limited range (3,000 miles) well short of the United States. The P-II, however, could not only reach the Soviet Union, but it could destroy Moscow’s command and control systems with incredible accuracy. Since the Soviets would have limited warning time – less than five minutes – the P-II was viewed as a first-strike weapon that could destroy the Soviet early warning system.
“In addition to the huge strategic advantage from the deployment of P-II and numerous cruise missiles, the U.S. deployment of the MX missile and the D-5 Trident submarine placed the Soviets in an inferior position with regard to strategic modernization. Overall, the United States held a huge strategic advantage in political, economic, and military policy.
“The Pentagon’s psychological warfare program to intimidate the Kremlin, including dangerous probes of Soviet borders by the Navy and Air Force, was unknown to CIA analysts. Thus, the CIA was at a disadvantage in trying to analyze the war scare because the Pentagon refused to share information on military maneuvers and weapons deployments.
“In 1983, the CIA had no idea that the annual Able Archer exercise would be conducted in a provocative fashion with high-level participation. The exercise was a test of U.S. command and communications procedures, including procedures for the release and use of nuclear weapons in case of war.”
Goodman continued: “I believed that Soviet fears were genuine and Reagan’s national security advisor, Robert McFarlane, was even known to remark, ‘We got their attention’ but ‘maybe we overdid it.’ … [CIA Director William] Casey took our analysis to the White House, and Reagan made sure that the exercises were toned down.
“For the first time, the Able Archer exercise was going to include President Reagan, Vice President Bush, and Secretary of Defense Weinberger, but when the White House understood the extent of Soviet anxiety regarding U.S. intentions, the major principals bowed out. … Soviet military doctrine had long held that a possible U.S. modus operandi for launching an attack on the USSR would be to convert an exercise into the real thing.
“Three decades later, history seems to be repeating itself. Washington and Moscow are once again exchanging ugly broadsides over the confrontations in Ukraine and Syria. The Russian-American arms control and disarmament dialogue has been pushed to the background, and the possibilities of superpower conflict into the foreground. Pentagon briefers are using the language of the Cold War in their congressional briefings, referring to Putin’s Russia as an ‘existential threat.’”

The KAL-007 Prequel
As I wrote after the MH-17 shoot-down in 2014:
The death of all 298 people onboard the Malaysia Airline flight, going from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, will surely provide plenty of fuel for the already roaring anti-Russian propaganda machine. Still, the U.S. press might pause to recall how it’s been manipulated by the U.S. government in the past, including three decades ago by the Reagan administration twisting the facts of the KAL-007 tragedy.
In that case, a Soviet fighter jet shot down a Korean Air Line plane on Sept. 1, 1983, after it strayed hundreds of miles off course and penetrated some of the Soviet Union’s most sensitive airspace over military facilities in Kamchatka and Sakhalin Island.
Over Sakhalin, KAL-007 was finally intercepted by a Soviet Sukhoi-15 fighter. The Soviet pilot tried to signal the plane to land, but the KAL pilots did not respond to the repeated warnings. Amid confusion about the plane’s identity — a U.S. spy plane had been in the vicinity hours earlier — Soviet ground control ordered the pilot to fire. He did, blasting the plane out of the sky and killing all 269 people on board.
The Soviets soon realized they had made a horrendous mistake. U.S. intelligence also knew from sensitive intercepts that the tragedy had resulted from a blunder, not from a willful act of murder (much as on July 3, 1988, the USS Vincennes fired a missile that brought down an Iranian civilian airliner in the Persian Gulf, killing 290 people, an act which President Ronald Reagan explained as an “understandable accident”).
But a Soviet admission of a tragic blunder regarding KAL-007 wasn’t good enough for the Reagan administration, which saw the incident as a propaganda windfall. At the time, the felt imperative in Washington was to blacken the Soviet Union in the cause of Cold War propaganda and to escalate tensions with Moscow.
To make the blackest case against Moscow, the Reagan administration suppressed exculpatory evidence from the U.S. electronic intercepts. The U.S. mantra became “the deliberate downing of a civilian passenger plane.” Newsweek ran a cover emblazoned with the headline “Murder in the Sky.”
“The Reagan administration’s spin machine began cranking up,” wrote Alvin A. Snyder, then-director of the U.S. Information Agency’s television and film division, in his 1995 book, Warriors of Disinformation.
USIA Director Charles Z. Wick “ordered his top agency aides to form a special task force to devise ways of playing the story overseas. The objective, quite simply, was to heap as much abuse on the Soviet Union as possible,” Snyder recalled.
Snyder noted that “the American media swallowed the U.S. government line without reservation.” Said the venerable Ted Koppel on the ABC News ‘Nightline’ program: ‘This has been one of those occasions when there is very little difference between what is churned out by the U.S. government propaganda organs and by the commercial broadcasting networks.’”
On Sept. 6, 1983, the Reagan administration went so far as to present a doctored transcript of the intercepts to the United Nations Security Council. …
“The tape was supposed to run 50 minutes,” Snyder said about the recorded Soviet intercepts. “But the tape segment we [at USIA] had ran only eight minutes and 32 seconds. … ‘Do I detect the fine hand of [Richard Nixon’s secretary] Rosemary Woods here?’ I [Snyder] asked sarcastically.’”
But Snyder had a job to do: producing the video that his superiors wanted. “The perception we wanted to convey was that the Soviet Union had cold-bloodedly carried out a barbaric act,” Snyder wrote.
Seeing the Whole Story
Only a decade later, when Snyder saw the complete transcripts — including the portions that the Reagan administration had hidden — would he fully realize how many of the central elements of the U.S. presentation were false.
The Soviet fighter pilot apparently did believe he was pursuing a U.S. spy plane, according to the intercepts, and he was having trouble in the dark identifying the plane.
At the instructions of Soviet ground controllers, the pilot had circled the KAL airliner and tilted his wings to force the aircraft down. The pilot said he fired warning shots, too. “This comment was also not on the tape we were provided,” Snyder wrote.

Hiding US Role in Yemen Slaughter So Bombing Can Be Sold as ‘Self-Defense’

To hear US corporate media tell it, the US was dragged into a brand new war on Wednesday.
US destroyers in the Gulf of Aden launched airstrikes against Houthi rebels, a Shia insurgent group currently withstanding a massive bombing campaign from a Saudi-led coalition in a year-and-half conflict between largely Shia rebels and the Saudi-backed Sunni government in Yemen.
The Pentagon insisted that cruise missiles had been fired onto the USS Mason on Sunday and Wednesday from Houthi-controlled territory, and called the airstrikes a “limited self-defense” response.
Needless to say, US media followed the Pentagon’s lead.
The fact that the United States has been literally fueling Saudi warplanes for 18 months while selling weapons and providing intelligence support to the Gulf monarchy—acts which even the US State Department believes could expose the US to war crimes prosecution—was either downplayed or ignored.
Nor did media recall the US’s long history of drone warfare in Yemen, where the military and CIA have been carrying out long-range assassinations since 2002, killing more than 500 people, including at least 65 civilians.
A video accompanying the New York Times story on the Yemen bombing (10/12/16) presents as fact the claim that Houthi rebels attacked a US ship—thought the rebels deny this, and even the Pentagon says it does not know for sure.
So far, most print media reporting has at least bothered to briefly put the attack and counterattack in broader context, noting the US role in the brutal bombing campaign that has left over 4,000 dead, including over 140 bombed at a funeral in Sana’a last week—even as the stories’ framing downplayed the US’s history in the conflict.
The New York Times (10/12/16), for example, said in the second paragraph of its report on the airstrikes (emphasis added):
“The strikes against the Houthi rebels marked the first time the United States has become involved militarily in the civil war between the Houthis, an indigenous Shiite group with loose connections to Iran, and the Yemeni government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia and other Sunni nations.”
But the Times story went on to acknowledge, somewhat contradictorily, that the US had been “quietly providing military support to a Saudi Arabia-led bombing campaign against the rebels since last year.”
The story noted that the US had been “providing intelligence and Air Force tankers to refuel the coalition’s jets and bombers.
“The American military has refueled more than 5,700 aircraft involved in the bombing campaign….More than 4,000 civilians have been killed since the bombing began, according to the United Nations’ top human rights official.
TV news reports, on the other hand, kept the spin and left out the context.
They mostly failed to mention that the US has been assisting the Saudi assault on the Houthi rebels for a year and a half, and framed the incident as a US warship being attacked while simply minding its own business in international waters.
CBS’s David Martin, fresh off his 14-minute Pentagon commercial last month, didn’t mention the Saudi bombing campaign or explain the US’s role in the war for his segment for CBS This Morning (10/13/16).
In fact, Martin never uttered the word “Saudi” or named any of the other countries involved in Yemen, only noting that the rebels are “trying to overthrow the government.” The average viewer would come away thinking the US Navy ship just happened to be in the neighborhood when it was randomly fired upon.
ABC‘s Martha Raddatz reports on US intervention in Yemen without using the words “Saudi” or “Arabia.”
ABC’s Martha Raddatz (Good Morning America, 10/13/16) likewise didn’t inform the viewer that the US has been a party to the civil war for 18 months. She also never used the word “Saudi” or referred to the brutal bombing campaign; she barely even alluded to there being a conflict at all.
CNN’s Barbara Starr (CNN, 10/13/16) joined the club, omitting the US and Saudi roles in the conflict entirely. She went one step further and repeatedly speculated about “direct” Iranian involvement in the Mason attack and what that would entail, despite there being zero evidence and no suggestion from the Pentagon of Iranian participation.
Starr even conflated Al Qaeda and Iran, despite their being on opposite sides of the conflict:
“The Yemeni missiles were fairly old but had been outfitted with highly lethal warheads, the kind Al Qaeda and Iran know how to make.”
The implication was that Al Qaeda might have somehow provided Houthi rebels with missiles, but this, of course, is absurd: The Houthis and Al Qaeda are sectarian enemies and have been fighting each other throughout the civil war.
Never mind; Starr needed to raise the stakes and throw out as many boogeymen as she could.
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow (10/13/16) delivered the worst of the batch. Not only did she too omit the Saudi bombing campaign and the US’s role in it (again, leaving the viewer to believe the attack was a total non sequitur), she spun the issue in tedious partisan terms, recalling Trump’s statement he would attack Iranian warships that threatened the US:
“You might remember Republican candidate Donald Trump said in an off-handed remark during the campaign that if Iranian ships got too close to American ships and if Iranian sailors made rude gestures towards our American sailors under President Trump, we’d blow those Iranian ships out of the water.
“Well, Iranian ships and American ships are now in the same waters, off the coast of Yemen in the middle of war, with Tomahawk missiles and cruise missiles already flying. Steady on.”
Why are American ships in those waters? Why are Tomahawk missiles “flying”?
The conflict is never explained; it’s only brought up so that Maddow can warn that the GOP nominee could make things worse.
Of course, it isn’t Trump who backed the Saudis in an air campaign that’s left thousands dead, but Obama—and it’s Hillary Clinton who as secretary of State enthusiastically pushed to sell warplanes to Riyadh (The Intercept, 2/22/16).
But such facts would messy up the election-season narrative.
Maddow, like the other reports, used the loaded modifier “Iran-backed” to describe the Houthis (even though experts and Pentagon officials think Iran’s support is overblown).
This is a stark asymmetry, considering that none of the reports referred to the Yemeni government as “US-backed” or “Saudi-backed.”
She also said that the Navy blamed the attacks on the Houthis, when the Pentagon only claims the missiles came from rebel territory, and could very well be from other allied groups (New York Times, 10/13/16).
Not only is the US’s backing of Saudi Arabia omitted from all these reports, the word “Saudi” isn’t uttered in any of them.
The viewer is given the impression that the war, aside from Iranian meddling, is an entirely internal affair—when it actually involves over 15 different countries, mostly Sunni monarchies propping up the Yemeni government—and that the rebels just randomly decided to pick a fight with the largest military in the history of the world.
The Houthis, for their part, vehemently deny having carried out the attack on the Mason, and there is no publicly available evidence it was them or allied forces. It should be noted, however, that Houthi forces took credit for sinking a United Arab Emirates supply ship two weeks earlier.
As is often the case with war, the issue of “first blood”—or who started the fighting—gets muddied.
Governments naturally want global audiences and their own citizens to view their actions as defensive—a necessary response to aggression, not aggression itself. US corporate media are aiding this official spin in their reporting on the US bombing of Yemen.

The militia command of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) has received information that the helicopter downed by the militia on Thursday, was carrying some instructors from NATO’s member states, the DPR Operations Command Spokesman Eduard Basurin told journalists on Friday.
“There were several military instructors from NATO member states onboard during the combat flight,” the Donetsk News Agency quoted Basurin as saying. According to the DPR sources, the helicopter landed on the outskirts of the Krasnogorovka settlement.
Sources in the command elaborated that the area was locked down and mobile communication was turned off.
On Thursday, October 13, head of the DPR Alexander Zakharchenko announced that the Ukrainian military, with the support of a combat helicopter, had attempted to carry out an attack on the DPR militia’s positions but the helicopter had been shot down.
The previous time the Ukrainian militia used aviation during hostilities was on January 19, 2015, when several Sukhoi Su-25 strike fighters were seen over Donbass.
The Minsk Memorandum dated on Septebmer 19, 2014, bans the use of combat aviation and unmanned aircraft in the ceasefire zone along the line of contact, excluding the unmanned aircraft of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission.

DONETSK, October 14. /TASS/. Ukrainian army units have attacked the positions of the forces of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) near the village of Leninskoye in the south of the republic on Friday afternoon following an artillery barrage, a source in the DPR operational command told the Donetsk News Agency.
“Ukrainian units, in violation of its cessation of hostilities’ obligations, began to attack our positions today at 13:50,” the source said.
“After the barrage, using 152-mm pieces, the enemy units launched an offensive near the village of Leninskoye supported by mortar fire. The battle continues to rage on.”
The DPR command urged the OSCE monitoring mission to take immediate steps to ensure the cessation of hostilities by the Ukrainian armed forces in the southern direction of the contact line.
On October 12, the Ukrainian military tried to break through the DPR defense line near the villages of Leninskoye and Kominternovo in Novoazovsky district.
Mercenaries from Poland and Georgia took part in the attack on the Ukrainian side. The attack was rebuffed, with the Ukrainian army losses amounting 15 killed and more than 30 wounded.
Pro-Kiev forces shell Luganskaya village to delay troops’ pullout
The Ukrainian side is intentionally delaying the pullout of military personnel and armaments from the engagement line in the Donbass area, Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Envoy Denis Pushilin said on Friday.
“Ukraine continues delaying the process of troops’ pullout and the situation at the engagement line is exacerbating,” Pushilin was quoted by the Donetsk News Agency as saying.
“Ukraine continues shelling the republic’s populated areas and provocations go on. That is, they are shelling and then say that they can’t pull out their troops due to this. This is absolutely absurd,” Pushilin said.
The Donetsk People’s Republic is ready for the next stage of the pullout of military hardware but this is impossible due to Kiev’s unwillingness to stop the shelling, he added.
The participants in the Contact Group on the political settlement in southeast Ukraine signed a framework agreement at their meeting in Minsk on September 21 on disengaging military personnel and combat hardware in three experimental security zones in the Donbass region.
The document defines the procedure of disengaging forces of the warring sides near the village of Petrovskoye (the Donetsk People’s Republic), the township of Luganskaya and the town of Zolotoye within the area of responsibility of the Lugansk People’s Republic militia.
As of today, the village of Luganskaya remains the last out of the three experimental security zones where the warring sides have not pulled out their forces.
The fifth attempt was disrupted through Kiev’s fault on Thursday to pull out troops in that area.

Head of Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill begins UK trip
BBC: 10/15 The head of Russia’s Orthodox Church is beginning a four-day visit to Britain, in which he is expected to meet the Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Patriarch Kirill is the first head of the Russian Church to visit the UK.
The Orthodox Church says it hopes the visit will help Russia and Britain “strengthen mutual trust”.
But BBC Moscow Correspondent Steve Rosenberg, said that at the moment “mutual distrust” characterised the relationship between the countries.
This week UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said he would like to see a protest against bombings of the Syrian city of Aleppo, which are being blamed on Vladimir Putin’s forces.
But Moscow, which denies the claims, accused him of “Russophobic hysteria”.
The northern Syrian city of Aleppo has become the most high-profile battleground in the country’s five-year civil war.
A UN relief convoy was attacked from the air last month – an action widely blamed on Russia, an ally of President Bashar al-Assad.
In an emergency House of Commons debate on Tuesday, Mr Johnson called for those responsible for strikes on the convoy and hospitals in Aleppo to face trial at the International Criminal Court.
Patriarch Kirill is a strong supporter of President Putin, and once described the leader’s time in office as a “miracle of God”.
His visit marks 300 years of the presence of the Russian Church in the UK, which began with a small Russian embassy church.

A Primatial visit of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia to the Diocese of Sourozh will take place from 15th to 18th October 2016. The visit marks 300 years of the presence of the Russian Church in Great Britain.
The opening in 1716 of a parish of the Russian Church associated with the Russian Embassy was the starting point for the development of Russian Orthodoxy in England.
Beginning from the small embassy church the Russian Church spread over the whole of Great Britain and Ireland. The parishes in both countries are united in the Diocese of Sourozh, which was founded in 1962.
The Patriarchal visit is an historic event for Russian Orthodoxy in the British Isles and may serve as an occasion to assess the 300 year presence of the Russian Orthodox Church in Great Britain.
The main event of the Primatial visit will be the consecration of the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God in London following a major refurbishment.
The work which has been carried out in preparation for the anniversary celebrations has included internal reordering, the construction of a new iconostasis, painting of new icons and the installation of a new set of bells.
On Sunday 16th October, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill will perform the consecration of the refurbished church of the Dormition of the Mother of God and will head the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in the newly-consecrated church.
Representatives of the Local Orthodox Churches will take part in the service, together with the clergy of the Diocese of Sourozh and invited guests.
On the day of his arrival, Saturday 15th October, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill will visit 32 Welbeck Street, the building that was home to the Russian Orthodox parish for more than 100 years, and celebrate a moleben (prayer service).
On the same day the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church will lead the Vigil service at the London church of the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia.
The programme of the visit includes an event at the Royal Geographical Society, where there will be an exhibition devoted to the pastoral journeys of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and also to the history of the Russian Church on British soil.
His Holiness will also bless a new gravestone, specially prepared for the anniversary celebrations, at the grave of the ever-memorable Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh.
Before his departure Patriarch Kirill will visit Lambeth and Buckingham Palaces.

RUSSIA’S FIRST YEAR OF OPERATIONS IN SYRIA
To put Russia’s one year of peacemaking operations in Syria in perspective, one should think back to what the situation was like on the eve of the arrival of the first Russian aircraft, support personnel, military advisors, and military equipment, to Syria.
By all accounts, Syrian government forces were in retreat on all fronts, being pushed back in Raqqa, Aleppo, Hama, Idlib, and Latakia provinces. The Islamic State, the Jabhat al-Nusra, the so-called “Free Syrian Army”, and many other smaller rebel formations were conquering towns and military bases, with their advance triggering a flood of refugees into Turkey, Jordan, and other countries.
Syria stood practically alone, with some Iranian assistance for sure, against a seemingly motley group of rebel formations which, however, enjoyed generous financial, military, and even operational support by several outside powers, including the United States, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, with Jordan and Israel maintaining a state of benevolent neutrality toward the rebels.
In September of 2015, the days of the Assad government seemed numbered.
In September of 2016, virtually nobody expects the Assad government to fall.
Even the US Secretary of State John Kerry, in conversations with Syrian opposition which were made available to US media, acknowledged that the anti-Syrian coalition has been outmaneuvered to the point that the long-standing US/NATO/EU mantra of “Assad must go” has become obsolete.
To the extent that nearly everyone recognizes that the world is now multipolar, Russia’s effective use of military power in Syria is the single most important factor behind that shift.
How did Russia manage to effect such a dramatic change in spite of seemingly overwhelming odds against it, in what is becoming a classic exercise in the use of military force?
The first secret of its success was the strict adherence to international law.To put it bluntly, US military operations on or over Syria’s territory have no legal justification at all.
Similarly, the support of the rebel groups listed above, most of whom allegedly pursue a radical agenda, employ large numbers of mercenaries, and don’t hesitate from committing atrocities to impose alien political dogmas, violates all manner of fundamental international norms, not the least of which are the concept of national sovereignty and self-determination.
In contrast, Russian operations are being conducted at the invitation of the sole internationally recognized government of Syria.
If the comprehensive campaign of disinformation and propaganda that is intended to shield Western audiences from the reality of the war in Syria is any indication, Western governments are keenly aware of the immorality and illegality of their actions. And so is the rest of the world.
Secondly, and also in stark contrast with the US and NATO uses of military power, Russia’s leadership appears to be aware of both the limits of the country’s power and of what can be accomplished using solely military force.
There is no trace of hubris, of “Russian exceptionalist” rhetoric in either the political aims being pursued, or the military means which are used to accomplish them.
In military sense, the goal of the operation is a modest one–the denial of victory to the West-backed jihadist coalition.
Once that objective is achieved, once every major anti-Syrian actor acknowledges that Syria’s legitimate government or Russia’s military presence in Syria cannot be dislodged by any combination of political and military measures, they will be forced to negotiate a peace settlement that will preserve both the territorial and political integrity of the Syrian state.
To be sure, that modest military objective did require a wide range of measures to accomplish. The most urgent was the refashioning of the crumbling Syrian Arab Army into a military force capable of recovering the lost territories.
While in the immediate term that task could be addressed by an aggressive bombing campaign that took the jihadists, unaccustomed to being opposed by a modern air force, by surprise.
But the air campaign was not intended to defeat the jihadists by itself, but rather gain time for the re-equipment and re-training efforts to bear fruit, which they began to by the first months of 2016.
Moreover, in the event the jihadists were expecting to outlast Syrian and Russian forces, the campaign of aerial interdiction of rebel supply routes and the Islamic State’s oil infrastructure was aimed at undermining the opposition’s long-term ability to sustain the war effort.
However, the jihadists and wild geeze aren’t the most dangerous foes faced by Syria.
The Russian military had to minimize the prospect of a direct NATO military operation against the Syrian military and government that, as in the case of Libya, would have been spearheaded by US airpower.
The goal of conventional deterrence against both air and land NATO incursions was achieved, though only after the loss of one Su-24 bomber, treacherously shot down over Syria by Turkish fighters, by the deployment of advanced S-400 air defense systems, Su-35 fighters, and Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles, and the demonstration of the power of Russia’s air- and sea-launched cruise missiles which would have struck US air bases throughout the Middle East in the event of any escalation.
This effort has not been without a cost. 20 Russian servicemembers have lost their lives in Syria in the space of last year.

The effect, however, has been nothing short of spectacular. Rebel forces are in retreat on nearly every important sector of the front, and even the crucial struggle for Aleppo, which has reached the scale of a general battle that will decide the future of Syria, has decisively swung in Syria’s favor.
Outside Syria, both friend and foe have taken note. Russia’s engagement has served as a veritable “seed capital” that drew larger contingents of Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Iraq’s Shia militias, and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, into the fray.
Turkey has opted for what amounts to a negotiated “separate peace” with Russia and Syria in exchange for a free hand to focus on the Kurdish threat to its own sovereignty.
Even the US, whose leaders are perennially invoking “Plan Bs” in an effort to intimidate Russia, is finding itself without viable policy options.
While the war is still far from over, after one year of intervention all the political and military trends in Syria are now in a positive direction.

Reuters: Exclusive: Obama, aides expected to weigh Syria military options on Friday
U.S. President Barack Obama and his top foreign policy advisers are expected to meet on Friday to consider their military and other options in Syria as Syrian and Russian aircraft continue to pummel Aleppo and other targets, U.S. officials said.
Some top officials argue the United States must act more forcefully in Syria or risk losing what influence it still has over moderate rebels and its Arab, Kurdish and Turkish allies in the fight against Islamic State, the officials told Reuters.
One set of options includes direct U.S. military action such as air strikes on Syrian military bases, munitions depots or radar and anti-aircraft bases, said one official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.
This official said one danger of such action is that Russian and Syrian forces are often co-mingled, raising the possibility of a direct confrontation with Russia that Obama has been at pains to avoid.
U.S. officials said they consider it unlikely that Obama will order U.S. air strikes on Syrian government targets, and they stressed that he may not make any decisions at the planned meeting of his National Security Council.
One alternative, U.S. officials said, is allowing allies to provide U.S.-vetted rebels with more sophisticated weapons, although not shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, which Washington fears could be used against Western airliners.
The White House declined to comment.
Friday’s planned meeting is the latest in a long series of internal debates about what, if anything, to do to end a 5-1/2 year civil war that has killed at least 300,000 people and displaced half the country’s population.

Perhaps its accurate but I find it hard to believe the security of a nation assembling aircraft for a nuclear war would be so lasped as to let a casual contractor see large numbers of these aircraft being assembled and painted for war.
I was suprised at how LITTLE information about Diego Garcia came out when that missing Malaysian airlines plane went down.
Nobody it seems, no reporters nor any other kind of crash investigator, who did not have military clearance got anywhere near the place, and Diego Garcia was the most obvious place to start looking for the missing plane.
On the other hand a good friend told me the first Gulf war was coming six months before it happened because that is how long it took the US to ship all the Abrams tanks from America into Kuwait, and the war must have been planned a long time before 9/11 because those tanks are designed for the Middle Eastern desert and not for Europe.
They are too heavy for the bridges in Europe and were not needed in the USA. Those tanks were designed to make war for Israel.

No Prospect of World War – The US Is Bluffing
A direct US-Russian confrontation is impossible, but there are fears of incidents in third countries, states an influential Russian daily newspaper
The Pentagon called war between Russia and the USA a hypothetic scenario, according to its spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Baldanza speaking to Izvestia.
But American and Russian experts queried by Izvestia are certain that despite the generals’ prognosis, real armed conflict between the two nuclear powers is possible.
American political expert and senior fellow at New York University and former Senior Advisor to the US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Barnett Rubin, told Izvestia that generals do not push for war between Russia and the USA, but they plan for the unexpected.
“The main thing they said is that if there was a new world war, it would be devastating beyond imagination. That’s why the only solution is that Russia and the USA cooperate to solve problems” — Rubin said.
Discussions of war between the USA and Russia began after American generals spoke at a Pentagon meeting on October 4, saying that war would be “quick and lethal”.
Army Chief of Staff General Mark Milley said that armed conflict between Washington and Moscow was “almost guaranteed”. Moreover, Major General William Hicks said war would begin “in the very near future,” and the Pentagon has begun to prepare for combat on a scale that the US has not seen since the Korean War.
Deputy Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Joseph Anderson, pointed out that “modern nation states behaving aggressively in the context of military rivalry” are a real threat to US security. “What does this remind us of? Russia”, – Anderson replied to his own question.
Russian military in turn, do not give credence to the statements by American generals. For example, according to Colonel General President of the Academy of Geopolitical Issues, Leonid Ivashov, the Pentagon is bluffing, trying to intimidate Russia.
“The US understands that in the event of war, it would not escape strikes on its territory. The Pentagon says one thing, the State Department – another. One thing is clear: this statement was made to intimidate Russia and stall action in Syria,” he said to Izvestia.
State Duma Deputy Victor Vodolatsky confirmed to Izvestia that it was very hard to imagine a direct confrontation between Russia and the USA, and that it was a personal opinion of some generals that world war was inevitable.
Contradictions between Moscow and Washington are experienced most intensely in Syria, and a direct confrontation is most probable there.
Senior Fellow of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut and political analyst Yazid Sayegh, analyzing the situation in Syria, told Izvestia that there was no prospect of real war between the US and Russia.
“By its actions in Syria, the US showed that it did not want a direct military conflict with Russia, and Moscow is not interested in a “hot war” against Washington either. Only an indirect confrontation through allies in Syria is likely,” — he said.
American political analyst and Senior Advisor at Gulf State Analytics, Theodor Karasik told Izvestia that the statements of a few American generals were the opinions of “hot heads” of the Cold-War generation. “They are still convinced that world war is inevitable, failing to understand that we have been living in a completely different geopolitical reality.
“There is a high probability of confrontation between America’s new fifth generation fighters and the Russian S-300 missile systems in Syria, but world war is unlikely. Escalation between Russia and the US would further destabilize not only the Middle East but also Eastern Europe and the Arctic Region,” — the American expert said.
Richard Weitz, Director of the Center for Political-Military Analysis at the Hudson Institute told Izvestia that a direct US-Russian war is almost impossible because the future of the whole world would be at stake.
“Washington does not consider this scenario a realistic one, although accidents could lead to the death of Russian and American soldiers, as happened with the Russian plane shot down by Turkey last year.
“General Milley said that the nature of war had changed, starting with rapid decision-making and ending with destruction. That is why the army is preparing for “probable” wars, exercising for possible confrontations with equal rivals like Russia and China, as well as the fight against terrorism and other military operations.
“We will face the most serious threat if terrorists, who can seize nuclear weapons, attack these countries. Terrorists can carry out this type of operation making it look as though certain countries are behind them.
“Moscow and Washington traditionally cooperate to combat this kind of threat. Despite recent quarrels over plutonium and an agreement on nuclear research, I still hope that cooperation will be resumed,” – Weitz concluded.

The brother of Poland’s late president Lech Kaczynski has agreed to exhume the late leader’s body as part of an inquiry into his death. The cause of the 2010 plane crash has fueled conspiracy theories for years.
The presidential plane went down in Smolensk in western Russia in April 2010, in an aviation tragedy that senior members of the populist Law and Justice (PiS) party have claimed could have been an assassination that was covered up by the Polish and Russian governments.
“The bodies, once they were brought back to Poland, were not examined,” Jaroslaw Kaczynski said of the victims, among them his brother and his wife, the military chief of staff and the head of Poland’s central bank.
‘There was no autopsy.’
The incident occurred as pilots attempted to land a Soviet-made TU-154 in heavy fog at a little-used airport near Smolensk in western Russia.
The Polish delegation had been on its way to a ceremony in Russia’s Katyn forest for the tens of thousands of Polish army officers killed by Soviet secret police in 1940.
Kaczynski has long said he suspected foul play but Polish and Russian investigators concluded there was no evidence to support the claim.
But now that the PiS is in power, Polish prosecutors have said they would re-open the victims’ coffins – which had been sealed in Russia – arguing post-mortem examinations were needed to establish the cause of the crash.
That decision has been controversial in Poland with some family members of victims objecting.
In fact, only 10 percent of Poles approve of the decision to exhume the bodies, according to an opinion survey conducted by the Ipsos institute published Saturday.
Moscow has so far refused to return the wreckage of the jet to Poland, a member of NATO and the European Union. This has strained relations between Warsaw and Moscow, capitals with a long history of enmity stretching from imperial times up through the end of the Cold War.

Autopsies are done to establish or confirm cause of death and circumstances, and perform tests, and sometimes forensically establish identity of victims, not the causes of airplane crashes. The cause of death was the airplane crash.
Poland was included every step of the way in the months’ long investigation into the 2010 crash Polish Air Force Tu-154 crash in Smolensk, Russia.
When Russia opened their investigation, Poland’s chief prosecutor opened a separate investigation at the time — meaning, a criminal investigation was piggybacked onto the Interstate Aviation Committee’s (IAC; MAK) investigation.
The IAC is the supervising body overseeing the use and management of civil aviation in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The IAC is the official civil aviation authority in Russia while some other countries recognize it as a certification and expert body to a varying extent. In any case, the IAC is signatory to all international aviation treaties, laws, and regulations.
Russia offered full cooperation to Polish prosecutors and their own medical, aviation, and scientific experts during the investigation.
According to the IAC conducting the investigation, Polish investigators in Russia were given access to all procedures of Russian investigators, which included the identification of body parts through forensic genetic testing.
President Kaczynski’s body, along with that of his wife and other government officials, were retrieved relatively intact from the reinforced presidential compartment of the aircraft after the crash. They were readily identified and arrangements immediately made to send the president and first lady of Poland home for their state funeral.
As is usual in accident and criminal incidents within a certain jurisdiction, Polish investigators didn’t have the authority to conduct investigative actions by themselves, but they participated on equal terms with their Russian counterparts in the interviews with people involved and other parts of the investigation.
The Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder, both of Soviet design, were analyzed in Russia with the participation of Polish experts. The Quick Access Recorder, designed and produced in Poland, was sent to Poland and analysed there, with the participation of Russian experts.
The Flight Management System units, manufactured in the United States, were analyzed there with the participation of the FAA, NTSB, Polish experts, and Russian experts.
And once the entire investigation was concluded, it became subject to public peer review by the entire aviation review boards around the world.

4,500 Sailors, Marines to Deploy from San Diego on Makin Island Ready Group
The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group is scheduled to depart Naval Base San Diego to the Pacific, Middle East and the Horn of Africa on Friday, the Navy announced Wednesday.
Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (MKIARG) is comprised of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island, amphibious transport dock ship USS Somerset and amphibious dock landing ship USS Comstock.
More than 1,100 Sailors and 1,500 Marines will deploy aboard Makin Island; 375 Sailors and 700 Marines will deploy aboard Somerset; and 410 Sailors and 400 Marines will deploy aboard Comstock.
During deployment they will operate with the embarked forces of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Amphibious Squadron Five, the “Blackjacks” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 21 and detachments from Assault Craft Unit 5.
While deployed, the team will provide maritime security operations, crisis response capability, theater security cooperation and forward naval presence, according to the U.S. Navy.
With ships, aircraft, troops, and logistical equipment, the U.S. Navy states “the MKIARG/MEU is a self-contained and self-sustained task force capable of conducting everything from combat operations to providing humanitarian assistance.”
U.S. Navy Capt. Michael Crary, Commander, Amphibious Squadron Five, and Marine Col. Clay Tipton will lead the MKIARG/MEU team on the mission.
The announcement came on the same day that Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook released a statement regarding U.S. strikes on three radar sites in Houthi-controlled territory on Yemen’s Red Sea Coast:
“The strikes — authorized by President Obama at the recommendation of Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Joseph Dunford — targeted radar sites involved in the recent missile launches threatening USS Mason and other vessels operating in international waters in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb.
“These limited self-defense strikes were conducted to protect our personnel, our ships, and our freedom of navigation in this important maritime passageway.
“The United States will respond to any further threat to our ships and commercial traffic, as appropriate, and will continue to maintain our freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandeb, and elsewhere around the world.”
According to Cook’s statement, initial assessments show the strikes destroyed the sites.

Opinion: The Media are Misleading the Public on Syria

COVERAGE OF the Syrian war will be remembered as one of the most shameful episodes in the history of the American press.
Reporting about carnage in the ancient city of Aleppo is the latest reason why.
For three years, violent militants have run Aleppo. Their rule began with a wave of repression. They posted notices warning residents: “Don’t send your children to school. If you do, we will get the backpack and you will get the coffin.”
Then they destroyed factories, hoping that unemployed workers would have no recourse other than to become fighters. They trucked looted machinery to Turkey and sold it.
This month, people in Aleppo have finally seen glimmers of hope. The Syrian army and its allies have been pushing militants out of the city. Last week they reclaimed the main power plant. Regular electricity may soon be restored. The militants’ hold on the city could be ending.
Militants, true to form, are wreaking havoc as they are pushed out of the city by Russian and Syrian Army forces.
“Turkish-Saudi backed ‘moderate rebels’ showered the residential neighborhoods of Aleppo with unguided rockets and gas jars,” one Aleppo resident wrote on social media.
The Beirut-based analyst Marwa Osma asked, “The Syrian Arab Army, which is led by President Bashar Assad, is the only force on the ground, along with their allies, who are fighting ISIS — so you want to weaken the only system that is fighting ISIS?”
This does not fit with Washington’s narrative. As a result, much of the American press is reporting the opposite of what is actually happening. Many news reports suggest that Aleppo has been a “liberated zone” for three years but is now being pulled back into misery.
Americans are being told that the virtuous course in Syria is to fight the Assad regime and its Russian and Iranian partners. We are supposed to hope that a righteous coalition of Americans, Turks, Saudis, Kurds, and the “moderate opposition” will win.
This is convoluted nonsense, but Americans cannot be blamed for believing it. We have almost no real information about the combatants, their goals, or their tactics. Much blame for this lies with our media.
Under intense financial pressure, most American newspapers, magazines, and broadcast networks have drastically reduced their corps of foreign correspondents.
Much important news about the world now comes from reporters based in Washington. In that environment, access and credibility depend on acceptance of official paradigms. Reporters who cover Syria check with the Pentagon, the State Department, the White House, and think tank “experts.”
After a spin on that soiled carousel, they feel they have covered all sides of the story. This form of stenography produces the pabulum that passes for news about Syria.
Astonishingly brave correspondents in the war zone, including Americans, seek to counteract Washington-based reporting.
At great risk to their own safety, these reporters are pushing to find the truth about the Syrian war. Their reporting often illuminates the darkness of groupthink. Yet for many consumers of news, their voices are lost in the cacophony. Reporting from the ground is often overwhelmed by the Washington consensus.
Washington-based reporters tell us that one potent force in Syria, al-Nusra, is made up of “rebels” or “moderates,” not that it is the local al-Qaeda franchise.
Saudi Arabia is portrayed as aiding freedom fighters when in fact it is a prime sponsor of ISIS. Turkey has for years been running a “rat line” for foreign fighters wanting to join terror groups in Syria, but because the United States wants to stay on Turkey’s good side, we hear little about it.
Nor are we often reminded that although we want to support the secular and battle-hardened Kurds, Turkey wants to kill them. Everything Russia and Iran do in Syria is described as negative and destabilizing, simply because it is they who are doing it — and because that is the official line in Washington.
Inevitably, this kind of disinformation has bled into the American presidential campaign. At the recent debate in Milwaukee, Hillary Clinton claimed that United Nations peace efforts in Syria were based on “an agreement I negotiated in June of 2012 in Geneva.”
The precise opposite is true. In 2012 Secretary of State Clinton joined Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Israel in a successful effort to kill Kofi Annan’s UN peace plan because it would have accommodated Iran and kept Assad in power, at least temporarily. No one on the Milwaukee stage knew enough to challenge her.
Politicians may be forgiven for distorting their past actions. Governments may also be excused for promoting whatever narrative they believe best suits them. Journalism, however, is supposed to remain apart from the power elite and its inbred mendacity. In this crisis it has failed miserably.
Americans are said to be ignorant of the world. We are, but so are people in other countries. If people in Bhutan or Bolivia misunderstand Syria, however, that has no real effect.
Our ignorance is more dangerous, because we act on it. The United States has the power to decree the death of nations. It can do so with popular support because many Americans — and many journalists — are content with the official story.
In Syria, it is: “Fight Assad, Russia, and Iran! Join with our Turkish, Saudi, and Kurdish friends to support peace!” This is appallingly distant from reality. It is also likely to prolong the war and condemn more Syrians to suffering and death.

This must give Kevin Barret and Tony Hall the creeps as they both seem to try to do a good job.
It strikes me that the road to world peace is pretty simple. The people behind all the wars are identifiable as rich Jewish bankers.

Any parallels between American-Iraqi push to evict ISIS from Mosul and the Russian-Syrian push to evict al-Qaeda from Aleppo are strictly non-existent
The Iraqi-American-Kurdish-Iranian offensive to capture Mosul has kicked off today it has been officially announced.
Remember citizen of a NATO country, this is the offensive you are to cheer on. It features American special forces, artillery and air force backing local partners to evict the terrible ISIS terrorist-sectarian gang from Iraq’s third largest city.
This is clear proof that US government has been taking the ISIS problem very seriously, and therefore come November if you’re American you should vote Hillary Clinton.
The offensive actually sees US forces backing an Iran-friendly government and fighting alongside Iranian-trained militias with names like Kata’ib Hezbollah — that you were previously told are super scary but never mind that — that’s only true if and when the moon aligns with the planets in a certain way.
The offensive is also likely to kill and maim many of the civilians it will be liberating (at least their corpses will be free!) but you needn’t spoil your day by dwelling on that — the media will certainly help you with that by talking about more important stuff, like how Julian Assange leaks “often benefit Russia”.
Also keep in mind that ISIS has forbidden civilians from fleeing the city and will be using them as human shields — but not to worry, this the media will be sure to help you remember.
There is also fear that once the battle is over the Shia or Kurdish forces may carry out collective reprisals against the Sunni Arab population suspected of having supported the ISIS insurgency, but hey what can you do? Unless you want American boys to do the dying you have to go battle with the cobelligerents you have, rather than the ones you wish you may have had.
Most importantly remember the battle for Mosul is nothing at all like the battle for Aleppo. Mosul is in Iraq but Aleppo is not in Iraq. Mosul is held by ISIS but Aleppo is not held by ISIS. Mosul features Americans on the side trying to take the city from the old al-Qaeda in Iraq (Stalinist wing), but Aleppo has Americans propping up the defenses of the old al-Qaeda in Iraq (Trotskyite wing).
In fact Aleppo is not even a battle. Al-Qaeda and sectarian rebels happy to follow al-Qaeda shock troops into battle do not exist. Aleppo is a massacre, a war of government against civilians. In Aleppo a mad authoritarian is barrel-bombing his people because he likes to see people dead.
He has also invited in Russians to systematically destroy bakeries and aid convoys — Russians of course have never been able to say no to a good massacre.
Also remember the Syrian dictator is friends with Iran and supported by militias with names like Hezbollah — this is very scary.
East Aleppo is not controlled by child beheaders. It is controlled by boys covered in dust and activists pulling bodies from under the rubble (and calling for more rubble). The uber-sectarian bin Ladenites who do not control Aleppo are not preventing people from leaving.
Al-Qaeda which does not exist in Aleppo is not using civilians as human shields. Aleppo is nothing like Mosul. Aleppo is the desperate attempt of the Syrian state to preserve itself against a foreign-instigated sectarian Islamist insurgency.
Mosul is the world’s priciest election ad for Hillary Clinton. Iraqis, Americans, Kurds and Iranians fighting to expel ISIS from Mosul is why you should vote to extend Democrat rule in Washington.
Syrians, Russians, Iranians and Iraqis trying to expel al-Qaeda and allies from Aleppo, on the other hand, is why those Democrats should extend their rule to Damascus.
Hillary Clinton for the White House, Abu Mohammad al-Julani for the Presidential Palace of Syria! Clinton-Julani! For the people who understand that sometimes (during election season) you have to fight al-Qaeda derivatives, but at other times you have protect them. — Eg when you’re toppling the last secular Arab nationalist regime in the Middle East.

SYRIA & IRAQ WAR REPORT – OCTOBER 17, 2016: MILITARY OPERATIONS IN ALEPPO AND MOSUL
Since previous military report, the Syrian army, Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, Liwa al-Quds Lebanese Hezbollah have achieved more gains in Aleppo city.
They took control of the agriculture school, located south of Tall Asfar, and reached the ”Youth Housing” north of the Hanano Housing. Now, the army and Liwa al-Quds focused on military operations in the areas of the Ba’edin and Jandoul roundabouts.
By Oct. 17, the government forces seized the Intharat Heights near the Ba’edin roundabout and secured the areas near the neighborhoods of Ayn at-Tal and Haydariyah.
A separate attempt to push to Jabal Badro has not resulted in any notable success.
The army and the National Defense Forces (NDF) also launched an operation, advancing in the areas west of the Aleppo International Airport. Sheikh Lutfi is the goal.
On Oct. 17, clashes intensified in Salah Addeen and the army took control of large parts of the 1070 Apartent Project.
On Oct. 16, the Syrian Army’s Tiger Forces and the NDF liberated from Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra), Ahrar al-Sham and its allies the strategic city of Ma’ardas in the northern part of Hama province.
This was the biggest success of the pro-government forces since the start of massive counter-offensive in the province.
The militant-controlled city of Souran will become the next target of the army and the NDF. Both Souran and Ma’ardas are strategically located along the highway between the cities of Homs and Aleppo.
The army also set a full-control of the villages of Qudsiyah and al-Hamah, located near Damascus after militants had withdrew from the areas under the deal with the government.
On Oct. 17, the army and the NDF continued operation in Western Ghouta, aiming the strategic town of Khan Shih.
The government forces were developing the advance from the recently liberated town of Deir Khabiyah. The militants’ defenses are on the verge of collapse in the region.
Late on Oct. 15, the ISIS terrorist group withdrew from the area of Azaz in the northern part of Aleppo province. The ISIS forces were set to deploy in Al-Bab in order to prepare to defend this strategic city in Aleppo province.
Next day Turkish-backed militant groups, supported by the Turkish Armed Forces, took control of the cities of Dabiq and Sawran and the nearby areas, including Sawran, Tilalayn, Salihiyah, Hawr al-Nahr and Sunbul.
On Oct. 15, the Russian Northern Fleet officially announced that a group of warships, led by heavy aircraft-carrying missile cruiser, had started a cruise to the areas of the northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
The group includes “the Pyotr Velikiy heavy nuclear missile cruiser, anti-submarine warships the Vice Admiral Kulakov and the Severomorsk, as well as supply vessels.”
The Kuznetsov is expected to join up with a nuclear submarine, as well as Tu-160 long-range strategic bombers, for anti-piracy and anti-terror exercises before arriving in Eastern Mediterranean where it will join the Russian forces fighting terrorists in Syria.
The joint forces of the US-led coalition, the Iraqi government, the pro-government Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) and the Kurdish Peshmerga launched the long-awaited military operation to liberate the last ISIS major stronghold in Iraq – Mosul.
Since Saturday, Mosul and the nearby areas have been the target of massive shelling and bombing campaigns by the US artillery and the US-led coalition’s air power.
The joint anti-ISIS forces are aiming to secure the Mosul countryside before storming the ISIS stronghold itself. On Oct. 16, the Iraqi Army’s 9th Division and the PMU liberated the city of Bashiqa from ISIS.
The Peshmerga joined the operation northeast of Mosul. The Kurdish fighters will block ISIS escape routers and receive and screen refugees but not enter the city.
The Obama administration focused on attempts to retake Mosul after the widely promoted idea of liberation of Raqqa in Syria failed due to the ongoing Turkish-Kurdish tensions in northern Syria.
There are also reports that the US military staff has opposed that operation because it will weaken anti-Assad forces.

Syrian Official Visits Cairo, Agrees on Coordinating Political Stances, Combating Terrorism

Chief of Syrian Bureau of National Security Major General Ali Mamluk accepted an Egyptian invitation for an official one-day visit to Cairo in which he met Deputy Chairman of National Security Apparatus Major General Khalid Fawzi, in addition to top Egyptian security officials.
Both Syrian and Egyptian sides agreed on coordinating political stances between Damascus and Cairo, as well as boosting mutual coordination on the level of combatting terrorism in both countries.
It is worth mentioning that this is not the first visit Gen. Mamluk makes to Cairo. He had previously paid a visit in September 2015 in which he met President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi.
The previous visit was followed by media openness on both countries. Besides, an Egyptian media delegation visited Damascus, meeting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem.

South Front: Representative of the commander of the Libyan army’s handed over a letter during a meeting at the Russian Foreign Ministry, addressed to the Russian President and the defense minister, containing a request for assistance.
Libyan Army Commander, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, sent a message to Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, and Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, in which he asked for arms shipments for his country’s troops.
The message was handed over to the Russian side by special envoy, Libya’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Abdel Basset al-Badri, who met with the Russian President’s special representative for the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov. This was reported by a source close to Russian diplomatic circles.
“Indeed, such a meeting happened. Al-Badri visited Moscow for one day. During the talks with Bogdanov, the lifting of the embargo and the beginning of the supply of weapons were discussed.
“Libya’s request is not only about small arms, but also equipment for aircraft. In addition, they urged Moscow to start a military operation against the Islamists in Libya, similar to the type that is now going on in Syria,” the source said.
According to the State Duma’s International Affairs Committee Member, Anwar Makhmutova, supplying weapons to the Libyan army to fight against Islamists makes sense.

Khalifa Haftar is known for his anti-Islamist views. In May 2014, he launched ‘Operation Dignity of Libya’. Back then, the commander announced his intention “to exterminate all extremists and terrorists.”

“Baghdadi escaped at the last moment from the airstrike on a meeting among commanders in Mosul,” the sources said without clarifying whether the strike was conducted by Iraqi forces or the US-led coalition.
Al-Baghdadi’s movements are known only by his inner circle, with the leader constantly changing location in Iraq and Syria to avoid airstrikes.
Mosul, the second biggest Iraqi city, as well as a number of other northern and western Iraqi cities and towns was seized in 2014 during an offensive of Daesh, a jihadist group outlawed in Russia.
On late Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi announced the start of the military operation to retake Mosul from Daesh terrorists.
On Wednesday, a military-diplomatic source in Moscow told RIA Novosti that the US and Saudi intelligence services agreed to provide the Daesh militants with safe passage to exit Mosul ahead of the assault planned by the international coalition.
According to the source, the US-Saudi plan also envisages transportation of several thousand militants from Mosul to the eastern Syria for an offensive against the Syrian government forces in control of Palmyra and Deir ez-Zor.

The Army then will pull out leaving the security of the city in the hands of the civilian police; and thus turning a page of a 5 years old conflict.
The deal does not include any non-Syrian fighters.
One of many examples that terrorism have no base in Syria, and no popular support.

A retired US Marine Corps general pleads guilty to lying about leaking information on Stuxnet, a worm specifically designed to attack Iranian centrifuges used for enriching uranium in 2010.
The former Joint Chiefs vice chairman, General James Cartwright, admitted on Monday that he had leaked information about the worm, reportedly part of a US-Israeli cyber attack to dismantle Iran’s nuclear power, read reports by various news outlets.
According to a court filing, “after investigators showed Cartwright a list of quotes and statements from David Sanger’s book, a number of which contained classified information, Cartwright falsely told investigators that he was not the source of any quotes and statements.”
Cartwright, who also led the US Strategic Command and was known for his close relationship with President Barack Obama, “falsely told investigators that he never discussed Country 1 with Daniel Klaidman when in truth Cartwright had confirmed certain classified information relating to Country 1 in an email he sent to Daniel Klaidman.”
The general (pictured above), who retired in 2011 and was stripped of his security clearance in 2013, pleaded guilty before US District Court Judge Richard Leon in Washington.
According to media reports, Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant was at the center of the cyber attack. The offensive failed as it was averted in time by Iranian experts.
Last year, Iran’s then-Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari called the 2010 attacks “illegal,” saying Tehran has never responded with “reciprocal cyber attacks.”
Jaberi Ansari went on to say that lack of an efficient legal system in the international arena to prevent and prohibit cyber attacks is one of the serious shortcomings in countering cyber raids.
